itors. Fabric has a good hand and is not too stiff. DWR finish works well but durability has yet to be determined.
-use of 3M reflective strips superior to competition
The BAD;
-coyote trim is thin and not like the Canada Goose Mantra or OSC mission.
-although a good idea, hood wire is badly executed
-no funnel hood like OSC and CG
-no reinforced elbows or shoulders
-no inner backpack straps to carry parka when weather gets warmer or when indoors
-750 power fill down not as good as OSC’s 800
-although most pockets were bellows style, they were undersized and therefore had limited capacity. CG and OSC both had larger pockets which are much better suited to storing additional gear.
-unlike OSC, the shell fabric is not waterproof/breathable with taped seams
-not enough internal pockets. Thee is only one tiny vertical pocket to store a wallet inside the parka. Most other manufacturers have generous internal pockets to store hat and mitts and survival gear. This is a huge deficiency
-outer side entry pockets are too shallow to shield bare or gloved hands from the wind and cold
-elastic draw cords are too thin and delicate. These will not be durable enough for the intended purpose of this parka
-snow skirt is not removable or insulated
-D-loops are simply sewn through and not reinforced or bar tacked. They also use Delrin plastic instead of steel and considering that Delrin plastic should not be relied upon below -40 degrees, this is not compatible with the temperature range of this parka and could result in a D-loop snapping off in your hands.
-upper side vent zippers are hard to access with gloves or mitts on since there are no zipper pulls
-no emergency shoulder pull straps in case wearer needs to be pulled out or away from danger
-no integrated polar fleece neck gaiter like OSC
The parkas from Canada Goose and Outdoor Survival Canada seem to be really made for Arctic/Antarctic use and the Vostok seems to want to imitate but not exactly follow through on the features that are necessary to put it in the same league. Yes the parka is $150 to $200 cheaper than the other 2 mentioned but this is still a premium priced parka that just falls short. They certainly don’t have the same overhead that Canada Goose has so they could have easily made the parka better without increasing the retail price. Think twice if you are buying this for an epic trip to a really cold place for work or adventure, it is much better suited to be used as a cold weather walking parka where you want to stay warm. of room to layer. A perfect size for the upper body, but it was so long it came past my knees. Obviously, made for taller men. I'm a stocky 5'8" at 220 lbs. I decided to try out the Vostok and wow, I'm sure glad I did. What a perfect fitting Parka. It doesn't have the long tunnel hood like the Snow Mantra, but still has the wire form fitting fur brim to close up around the face if needed. I bought an XL and I couldn't be happier. For my height, It comes mid thigh and the arms and shoulders are sized perfectly. Some extra room to layer too. So far I've tested it to -34°C with a -43°C wind chill with just a base layer and a micro fleece long sleeve shirt. No problem. Stayed nice and warm. It's not as warm as the Snow Mantra, but it's close. So if you're not planning a trip to the Arctic anytime soon, this will be more than enough for our typical cold snaps.
