Layer Up With Altitude Sports

Fleece got its start nearly six decades ago after Polartec LLC released it to the public. It became a sensational hit as an affordable alternative to wool. It was lightweight, fast-drying, comfortable, and durable. Today, fleece comes in a plethora of weights, colours, and styles suitable for any outdoor adventure.
And, that leads us to the offering you’ll find at Altitude Sports. We’re pretty good at providing the best selection out there. Opt for one of our men’s fleece sweatshirts... or sweaters the next time you head out into cold weather.

To Pile or Not to Pile

The warmth rating of each garment is determined using a scale consisting of 100, 200, and 300. The lower the rating, the smaller the pile. The higher the rating, the bigger the pile. More pile equals more space for heat to become trapped in the garment, less space does the opposite.
However, not all fleece sweatshirts and sweaters are rated on this scale––not to worry, this does not change the quality of the product. Merely look for terms such as “heavyweight”, “lightweight”, “low pile” or, “high pile”.
A classic example of a high-pile, exceptionally heat-retentive fleece sweater is the Patagonia Synchilla pullover––it’s even made of recycled polyester. Going for a winter run? Karpos has a good option. And, The North Face gets it right with their Canyonlands sweater––perfect as an everyday go-to when things get chilly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a fleece be tight or loose?

This largely depends on what you need a fleece for. If you don’t plan on layering much and you’re not looking for a lot of warmth, a tighter fitting fleece is the way to go. But looser fitting fleece is best for warmth, especially in cold weather. That extra space leaves room for proper layering and won’t restrict your range of motion.

What is the warmest winter fleece?

Most fleeces are pretty warm but the warmest winter fleece is going to have a high pile or appear “thicker”. That’s because the higher the pile, the more space there is for the fibres to trap heat.

Is fleece warmer than wool?

Fleece isn’t warmer than wool but it’s pretty dang close. Fleece was developed with the intention of creating a wool-like material that was cheaper, easier, and ethically optimal to produce. And, while fleece isn’t exactly wool, it comes fairly close to performing like it.
Fleece is highly heat retentive (even when wet), moisture-wicking, and odour-resistant. But, where wool lacks, its synthetic cousin excels: fleece is incredibly light compared to wool and easy on the pockets.
