What a relief!
Review by Milan F. on 2 Dec 2023 review stating What a relief!
Listen. I don’t live anywhere near a Filson store nor have I ever tried one on(mackinaw coat). So I was nervous with the sizing guide, I am normally a medium in clothes(Fjallraven for reference). I am 5’9 40” chest 33 waist and the small was a perfect fit. I spoke with Filson and Altitude over sizing and was heavily suggested to get a small. I lis...Read MoreRead more about Listen. tened and it worked. This was a purchase years in the making, I wanted one way back when they were $300 Canadian! Well, it was time to get one. I am so relieved it fit. As far as being itchy? Haven’t felt that whatsoever. There were a few thread tags not clipped on the stictches(about 4 of them). So i feel that it shouldn’t knock a 5 star rating, but it was on the inside of the jacket not outside. Quality and construction are on point(other than the mention above).
The wool is thick, I hear people saying the new ones were thinner when they went into a store to check it out. I can’t be certain but will say i was surprised how thick it was.
Things to think about: this jacket is not windproof! You will feel wind in certain situations. I have used mine in 50km/h snowsqualls -10°C and felt the wind seep through. Underlayer was merino wool with a fleece sweater in that situation. So yes that was to be expected. I did stay relatively warn but did feel that wind. I also experienced 30km/h winds at -5°(windchill was -12°). I did not feel the wind in that scenario. So it does block wind upto 30km winds. Also wore the EXACT same underlayer and midlayer for both situations.
Conclusion. It’s warm, functional and looks great. Actually looks great for a dinner/function in town and in the woods. Hard to find anything better. Read LessRead less about Listen. I don’t live anywhere near a

Not the same anymore!
Review by Julien B. on 3 Nov 2023 review stating Not the same anymore!
Filson changed their wool supplier for 2023 and it’s no more the Mackinaw wool from Pendleton in Oregon (and Canada) it’s now wool from Italy. I found one from 2022 with the Pendleton wool and the jacket feel way more thicker and quality. The color from the old ones is also a real grey charcoal versus the new ones which is more black. In the old o...Read MoreRead more about Filson changed their wool supplier for
nes there’s a small USA flag inside and a tag Made in USA. The new ones have only a tag Made in USA of imported materials. Filson need to get back on track with quality for that price. I had to return it since it was not what I expected from a 700$ jacket. Read LessRead less about Filson changed their wool supplier for

Filson Mackinaw Wool Cruiser Jacket
Review by Mark W. on 8 Dec 2023 review stating Filson Mackinaw Wool Cruiser Jacket
This Jacket is classy through 'n through. Remember it is to be used as a highly functional outer shell so the degree of warmth this jacket provides is really up to you and what you wear under it. Blocks wind pretty well. I haven't gotten it seriously wet yet but that will be the true test of its versatility. It's meant to fit roomy. ing to prioritize fashion over function and not layer much bulk underneath you may want to size down from your regular size if looking for a more fitted look. Sleeves are a bit long but at 5'8" thats to be expected.
There are 2 button options to adjust the tightness on your wrists which I appreciate as they cuffs don't ride up over my hands with the tighter option. An all round great coat with lots of pockets to hold all your EDC.
I use the map pocket in the back to hold my traveler mug full of coffee against my back, keeping both of us warm. This single Mackinaw cruiser has double 24oz wool throughout the back and in all the right spots on your body to hold in the heat. At first I was slightly concerned about the wool irritating the back of my neck without a barrier of clothing... it was a little scratchy at first ( virgin wool) but has softened up after moderate wearing and now feels quite nice. Like a new pair of quality boots this jacket benefits from a break in period and gets better every wear. It's designed to outlive the wearer. Perhaps I'll be buried in it and we'll see who gets the last laugh. Read LessRead less about This Jacket is classy through 'n

Best purchase I've made it years
Review by Greg C. on 12 Dec 2024 review stating Best purchase I've made it years
I've been eyeing this jacket for 5+ years and finally bought it and couldn't be happier. It's rugged yet refined. Warm enough for Calgary winter days and cool enough to be effortless. I'm 6'1 and 200lbs and bought M and it's perfect. I can easily wear a hoodie underneath it to pull off my look.

A Unique Jacket that Used to be Even Better
Review by Joe B. on 9 Dec 2024 review stating A Unique Jacket that Used to be Even Better
Love the functionality, design details, and 100% wool material. Filson make truly versatile and built-to-last garments. However, I have to agree with someone else who left a comment about a recent change in wool sourcing, from Pendelton USA / Canada to Italian imported wool, and how that has affected the overall quality of the coat. One thing is f...Read MoreRead more about Love the functionality, design
or sure: the "charcoal" is no longer an actual dark grey charcoal with nice contrasting texture in the material, it's basically black now (and doesn't look like the charcoal product photos that Altitude is presenting on this product page). I'm also not sure if the material is as thick and burly as it once was. Overall I'm disappointed in this change of material so will likely be returning the coat. People who haven't owned Filson products in the past and have nothing to compare it to will likely have no issue with the jacket. And I don't need to say it, but yes, definitely size down one size. Amazing
Review by Lucas K. on 6 Jan 2024 review stating Amazing
In love with this jacket, it's perfect for anywhere between 5 and 15 ºC and with another layer can easily go down to 0. Pockets are very handy and the charcoal colour is easy to dress up or down a bit. Medium fits perfectly but I wear a size or two larger in other jackets so consider sizing down.

Review by Daryn L. on 13 Nov 2023 review stating Love it!
I have bought a lot of Filson shirts and jackets for casual days and days at the cabin, cutting wood and enjoying the outdoors. The Mackinaw Cruiser Jacket is a classic at Filson: well-designed and top-end construction.

A wool coat with over a century of proven reliability.
When you want to wear one jacket regardless of changing weather conditions, our original Mackinaw Wool Cruiser excels. It’s made with durable wool in an uncommonly tight weave that turns away wind while remaining highly breathable. Wool’s complex natural structure wicks moisture to the tip of each fiber, enabling it to insulate dry or wet. It’s wet-weather performance is the reason wool has been the fabric of choice for outdoor protection for centuries. With four flapped pockets on the front and a full-width pocket the entire back, two layers of wool protect most of the torso, right where it’s most needed. Originally patented in 1914, C.C. Filson’s Cruiser was designed for foresters working in the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest forests. Originally offered as a pullover shirt as well as a button-front jacket, the Cruiser rapidly became one of the most imitated jackets on the market. With its utility and performance also appreciated by hunters, the Cruiser was soon offered in red/black plaid and bright scarlet colors. Filson woolen goods were adopted by the U.S. Forest Service as early as the 1920s, and by the 1940’s, Filson was producing variations of the Cruiser as U.S.F.S. field and uniform attire.
With more than a century of reliable service, our often-imitated Mackinaw Wool Cruiser has an enviable heritage and proves the adage, “what worked then, works now.”
