Below, we’ve created a list of our 6 most popular Blundstone boots for 2023. But did you know Blundstone celebrated their 150th in 2020? And did you know that the company remains family-owned and operated in Tasmania, Australia? So why not cap this year off with a pair “Blunnies”?

More than 150 years of Blundstone

In 1870, John Blundstone started making footwear built for the cobbled streets, farmland, factories, and well-pounded dance floors of Australia. While Blundstone boots – affectionately known as “Blunnies” in the Outback – remain the footwear of choice for Aussie workers, their styles have gone global. These leather boots now cushion the feet of trendsetters in art and fashion capitals around the world.

You want to know what keeps them on-trend? After 150-years of boot making, the company remains 100% committed to the durability, quality, and innovation that John Blundstone built his reputation on.

And to us, that’s authenticity.

Our absolute favourites Blundstone: 500’s & 510’s Originals

The Blundstone 500 in Original Stout Brown is sort of the 'true' original. Shaped like your foot for instant comfort, these Chelsea boots only get better with all-season wear.

They've got the ultimate construction of the brand's ruggedly famous footwear. The water-resistant upper’s premium leather looks even better on your feet as it ages. Cushioned polyurethane midsoles protect your feet and offer shock-absorption for your back. Bullet-proof TPU outsoles are resistant to all liquids (snow, rain, and even oil) and can withstand heat to 290°F, so you can literally walk them anywhere.

In our opinion, the best part of the Blundstone 500's is that they not only last forever, but can be worn with almost anything. Think about your favourite shorts and ankle socks on a summer hike to a secluded beach (a very Australian activity). In the winter, they look great with your jeans both in-and-out of the office and are perfect for a snowy walk home from the bar.

You'll also love that these boots come with an extra set of footbeds for fit and adjustments. And for the winter in Canada, you can even throw in a wool footbed for extra warmth.

The Blundstone 510 in Original Black are the exact same boots as the 500’s. It’s just that you get them in classic black leather instead of the polished brown.

Pros

 • The “original” Blundstone style
 • Versatile, unisex fit
 • Built to last

Our favourite Blundstone for Canadian winters

The Great White North. That nickname isn't about Canadian summers. Winter here calls for snow-proof, cold-proof winter boots. And the Blundstone 1392's are just that.

Upon first glance, the Blundstone 1392's aren't much different than the 1395's and 1308's. Looks-wise, they aren't. The real winter tech is hidden inside these boots.

They have the same premium leather uppers, PU midsoles, and everything-resistant TPU outsoles. But the leather uppers are fully waterproof. And this combo of materials makes the 1392's completely snow and ice-proof, which is necessary for at least 6-months of the year in Canada.

200g Thinsulate insulation lines the 1392's uppers, making them a little heftier than the Originals but much, much warmer. Trust us, this warm-air trapping insulation will keep your feet toasty on the coldest days.

Add in super comfy wool sheepskin footbeds sourced from Australia – included with the boots – and you have some insanely warm footwear. These deluxe wool foot-huggers also give your feet the softest landing pads for frigid temperatures. And because they are sheep's wool, they don't smell, and they wick away sweat and extra moisture (in case snow gets in).

Trust us when we say the 1392 Blundstone boots are winter-ready. They're some of the warmest, most durable, and most stylish winter boots on the market.

Price: 0.00$

Pros

 • Fully waterproof upper
 • Warm Thinsulate insulation
 • Sheepskin footbeds are ultra warm
 • Unisex

Cons

 • Too warm for summer (with the wool footbed in)

Our favourite Blundstone for dressing up

Looking for a more elegant way to get around the city in any season? The Dress 067s by Blundstone are boots that instantly dress (yes, pun intended) you up when you pull them on.

The silhouettes make these boots stand out, thanks to sharper 'squared' toes and lower-profile forefoots. This design wears perfectly with a pair of your favourite tapered pants or jeans, giving you a streamlined look.

Premium oiled leather uppers give the 067 – Dress Stout Brown Boots a sophisticated look that's still quintessentially Blundstone. You're going to want to clean and wax these uppers every few months to ensure they maintain their shine. Behind the uppers, the leather lining will wear correctly with your favourite pair of colorful dress socks.

PU midsoles offer improved comfort and cushioning compared to most regular chisel toe Chelsea boots. And the patented Thermo-urethane outsoles are resistant to just about any liquid, including oil. Real steel shanks through the midsoles give you some extra torsional stability. This means these boots will hold up when you're walking on any surface, from bumpy cobblestone to slick marble steps.

Price: 0.00$

Pros

 • Streamlined look
 • Durable Blundstone construction
 • Two sheen styles

Cons

 • May not fit wide feet well

Our favourite rustic Blundstone

Siblings of the 067s, the Blundstone 1306s are brushed, suave, and sophisticated for your outings in the city.

What sets the 1306s apart are their uppers. The Premium leather in Rustic Brown ages better than almost any other boot on the market. Pair this leather with the squared Chelsea-aesthetic, and you’ve got one sophisticated looking Blundstone. You can wear these Chelsea boots with a tweed jacket for an English Professor vibe or rock them with a band tee and skinny jeans to a concert.

Unlike the premium leather of the 067s, the aged Rustic Brown requires less maintenance. You’re still going to want to clean and wax the uppers, but a good waxing once a year is more than enough.

Just like the 067s, the 1306 boots come with the best Blundstone design and tech.

Price: 0.00$

Pros

 • Rustic brown ages nicely
 • Strong unisex vibes
 • Well-built Blundstone design

Cons

 • Same as the 067s, the 1306s might not fit wide feet

Our favourite Blundstone boots for Canadian Summers

Ultra-light. Ultra-breathable. And made for all types of summer adventures in the North, the Blundstone Actives are our choice for the best warm-weather leather boot.

Compared to the Originals, these Blundstones have a lower cut. This cut makes these boots slightly more breathable, with less of a cuff around your ankle.

Like other Blundstones, the 1496s come with premium leather uppers. But what's different about the leather on these boots is their stitch pattern. At the opening, there's a stitched slit on the inner side where there would be tongue on a 'normal' boot. Blundstone calls this pattern Feather Flex, which makes the canvas leather bend like you're barefoot.

Like the rest of the collection, these Blundstones are water-resistant. They also feature an anti-microbial lining that resists stink-age, so you can wear them with thin socks. Under your feet, a steel shank provides all the protection you need for wandering anywhere your feet take you.

We suggest you add the Actives to your seasonal wardrobe. And we also think these are some of the best travel boots on the market.

Price: 0.00$

Pros

 • Amazing summer travel boots
 • Low cut is more breathable
 • More flexible than normal Blundstones

Cons

 • Definitely more of a summer boot
 • Low stretch panels, so avoid deep puddles

Our favourite women’s-specific Blundstone boots

Classic premium leather look? Check. Women's-specific fit? Check. Unique high style? Check. Both the women's 1351 and 1352 Blundstone boots deliver a silhouette for all your seasonal needs.

These boots are designed for comfort and long-lasting style that lasts you 365 days a year, thanks to their classic construction and uniquely feminine style. They have a 'hi-top' ankle upper that provides increased support and extra protection against the weather.

Coming in hot, the Shiraz red 1352s have a sheen leather upper that's fully waterproof and will more than protect your feet against some spilled vino. If a more versatile look is your thing, the 1351s in Rustic Brown leather age exceptionally well (they might even look better dirty).

Both these boot styles have polyurethane midsoles for comfort and cushioning. Thermo-urethane outsoles – yes, they are super tech – give you some extra traction on slick surfaces. The outsoles are also resistant to rain, snow, hydrolysis, and microbial attacks. Go ahead: walk these boots through downtown Toronto. For once, you won't have to worry about what you step on.

How to choose a pair of Blundstone boots?

1. Style

 • The Originals

These are the classic rounded Blundstones with an all-season look and more of a traditional work-wear vibe. These boots are perfect if you’re into seasonal outings.

 • Chisel Toes

Chisel toes refer to a square toe. These boots can often fit a little more slim thanks to the narrower forefoot and slightly higher arch. Style-wise, these are perfect for your sophisticated adventures in the city, nights on the town, and business casual days at the office.

 • Women’s-specific styles

All of Blundstone boots in women’s-specific styles come in women’s-specific fits. This means they are slightly narrower than the unisex styles through the foot and have wider ankles for the calves. Note that some women’s Blundstone styles are ‘high-top,’ with uppers that reach higher up your ankles.

2. Sole

The sole usually refers to the midsoles (the middle sole) and the outsoles (what touches the ground) of a boot. When you’re buying Blundstone boots, you’re getting boots with premium polyurethane outsoles and midsoles. This combination is a softer poly-blend that provides cushioning through the midsole. On the outsole, the polyurethane is treated specially for dirt and pavement to make it more durable.

3. Insulations and linings

All Blundstone boots have leather linings, which are treated with anti-microbial treatments to resist odor. These linings are made of soft and supple leather so that they wear comfortably against your socks.

The Blundstone Winter Series comes with 200g of Thinsulate insulation. This is perfect if you’re looking for a boot that you’ll be wearing when the temperature is well below zero degrees Celsius.

FAQ

Q: How do Blundstone boots fit? Are they true to size?

A: First, it needs to be known that most Blundstone boots are unisex. When you’re fitting Blundstone’s, you need to follow the rule of toe.

This rule breaks down as follows: For Women, subtract 3 sizes from your Canadian size. For Men, subtract 1 size from your Canadian size. And for kids’ subtract 1 size from your Canadian size.

Q: Are Blundstone boots waterproof?

Winter Styles:

A: The entire Blundstone Winter collection features waterproof leather uppers, which are 100% waterproof. Styles on our list above include the Blundstone 566s and the 1391s and 1392s. We recommend you treat your winter boots seasonally with a proper waterproofer

Non-Winter Styles:

A: While all other Blundstone boots feature weatherproof leather, Blundstone can only guarantee that they are water-resistant and not fully waterproof. This means, unfortunately, that you may experience leakage if you go romping through puddles.

Blundstone leather is as water-resistant as any leather on the market while still allowing your feet to breathe. These unique boots have designs with a limited number of seams, which means there are fewer places for water to seep inside them. While they aren't fully 'waterproof,' if you properly care for your boots with water-resistant sprays, they'll more than take care of your feet in wet weather.

Q: Where are Blundstone Boots made?

A: You’ll see that Blundstone still manufactures boots in Australia, at their headquarters in Moonah, Tasmania.

That said, demand for the footwear has made the family-owned brand expand their factories to other countries. Blundstone now has manufacturing facilities in China, Europe, Mexico, and the United States.

In short, the model you choose will dictate where your Blundstone boots are made.

There you have it. Our list of the best Blundstone boots for 2024 has a little something for everyone and celebrates the brand’s 150th anniversary in style.

For the past three decades, prAna has focused on creating sustainable and stylish pieces for those who live an active lifestyle. What all started in a garage in Carlsbad, California has now grown into a global brand recognized for its high-quality clothing and commitment to the planet and all those who live on it.

PEOPLE ARE WHAT MATTER MOST

prAna is dedicated to positive change. That means continuously working to make advancements in terms of sustainability and also ensuring a safe and fair work environment. People are what matter the most to the brand, which is why in 2010, it joined the Fair Labor Association to promote and protect workers’ rights. A true leader in regards to promoting the health and safety of workers, prAna was one of the first brands to partner with Fair Trade USA for apparel.

In 2012, the brand also sponsored the first-ever Fair Trade Certified factory for apparel. When a factory is Fair Trade certified, it means that adequate safety measures have been put in place to protect workers’ physical and mental health and that any brand that purchases products from this factory will pay a premium for each item ordered, and a committee of factory employees will then decide how this money will be spent. Since then the brand has continued to sponsor these factories and to date has converted 11 Fair Trade Certified factories.

As of 2022, 50% of prAna’s products are either Fair Trade Certified or are made in a Fair Trade Certified factory. The company’s goal is for all of its products to be made in Fair Trade Certified factories by 2028.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RIGHT MATERIALS

prAna is not only focused on doing right by its workers, the brand also aims to do everything in its power to help the planet. In 2018, the brand began using 100% organic cotton in its products. By being 80% rain-fed, organic cotton reduces the pressure on local water sources. It also uses 88% less water than regular cotton. Organic cotton also does not require the use of harmful chemicals, therefore protecting farmers and their families.

prAna also makes use of recycled polyester. Recycled polyester is made from plastic bottles, packaging and textile waste and at the end of its lifespan it can be recycled once again. The use of recycled polyester helps to cut down on waste and prAna continues to use it more and more. Recycled nylon is also used as much as possible by the brand.

The brand has also started introducing the use of hemp in its products. Hemp is naturally odour-resistant and can survive solely on rainwater. It is a sustainable and durable material and growing it requires far less land and water than most other fibres. 9% of the styles featured in prAna’s spring collection used hemp and the brand hopes to see this number grow in the near future.

What goes into a product is just as important as what goes around it. prAna uses responsible packaging to reduce plastic and paper waste. As of fall 2021, 100% of the brand’s styles use plastic-free packaging. To eliminate the use of single-use plastic prAna has developed a roll-pack method. A special folding method is used and the products are then secured using a recyclable raffia tie. Products are shipped in recycled boxes or bags and recyclable paper tape is used for all packages.

prAna also makes sure that any paper used in packaging is sourced responsibly. Shipping envelopes and the tags used on clothing are made from 100% recycled paper while the size stickers are also eco-friendly and use a responsible sugar-based adhesive.

Fair treatment, responsibility, and transparency are key parts of everything prAna does. From how the brand treats its workers, to how it cares for the planet, the focus is always on making the best products using the best methods. The brand is constantly elevating its standards and continuously proving its commitment to positive change.

Fast fashion and clothes that are poorly made and designed to be immediately replaced aren’t cutting it anymore.

The post The North Face: Sustainable from Start to Finish appeared first on Altitude Sports.

Many consumers have made the switch to purchasing more environmentally-conscious clothing, but there is also a huge responsibility for companies to step up as well. At The North Face, nature is at the heart of everything they do, and they are constantly innovating their practices to be as sustainable as possible.

What is circular design?

Every second, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of fabric is buried or burned. In other words, 87% of the materials used to manufacture clothing turn into waste. So even if you have a sweater that is made from recycled materials (which is obviously a good thing), if it ends up in the trash after you no longer need it, then it’s not really great for the environment.

That’s where circular design comes into play.

Carol Shu, Senior Global Sustainability Manager at the North Face, hopes to make an impact and see that number come down. The principles behind this hope are now being applied to the company’s products.

The goal is to take a systemic approach to our circular economy efforts across multiple initiatives. First by making products recyclable once they are worn out or unusable, then continuing to expand the Renewed program to extend the lives of the products as much as possible.

Last year, The North Face announced that 2022 would feature its first fully circular collection, and it definitely delivered. This collection rethinks the way that clothing is made and does not simply settle for just using recycled materials. While the clothing is still made with recycled fabrics, more importantly, once an item is no longer being used, it can in turn be recycled in its entirety.

We are always inspired by nature. As the old adage goes, “nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed.” The North Face takes this to heart. Therefore pieces from this collection can be returned once they are no longer usable and they will then be recycled into brand-new products. This is the core principle of circularity: one continuous loop, where the materials used to manufacture clothing remain a part of the cycle, to be transformed into new items, and so on. All that, without sacrificing any of the comfort and performance that The North Face is known for.

The first fully circular collection

RESPONSIBLY-SOURCED FABRICS

The North Face has set the ambitious goal of ensuring that all their products are made with recycled, regenerative, or responsibly-sourced renewable fabrics. These fabrics are derived from materials that will replenish over the course of a lifetime, and the brand is on track to reach this goal for their apparel in 2025 and their footwear and equipment by 2030.

They are also committed to helping their suppliers and retailers to reduce their environmental footprints. Their suppliers receive recommendations on things like reducing their energy and water usage by implementing various improvements in their manufacturing processes and facilities. The North Face partners with retailers who share their mission and values, and strives to spread their efforts beyond their brand to reach the entire industry.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

Being environmentally conscious extends further than the product itself. As the popularity of online shopping only continues to rise, the sustainability of packaging has been put into question. The North Face has answered with their goal to eliminate their usage of single-use plastics by 2025.

However, Carol explains that there is a complicated dilemma faced by The North Face and many companies: “Reducing the environmental impact of packaging is a complex systems problem. Packaging protects products, and damaged products create waste.” With that said, she still states for the brand that, “reducing and prevention are always the best opportunities to take in the waste hierarchy.”

They are always working to reduce remaining product packaging and use only recycled content and/or third-party certified content (such as Forest Stewardship Council certification) for paper materials like product hangtags or cardboard shipping boxes.

Cutting back on our waste and reducing our ecological footprint is necessary to ensure a better future for our environment. With companies like The North Face making so many sustainable choices in their production line, it makes it easy for consumers to do the right thing. When you’re looking for products to take on your next outdoor adventure, do your research: find out how the clothes are made, and make sure you’re buying something that you know will serve you for many years. Shopping The North Face is a good place to start.

To learn more about the brand’s commitment to sustainability, we chatted with Philip Tavell, the Oslo-based Category Managing Director for Helly Hansen’s Ski, Mountain, and Baselayer categories.

The post Lifting up the Planet with Lifa Technology appeared first on Altitude Sports.

]]>

No one wants to go without the gear that keeps us dry, but unfortunately, most waterproofing technologies are made from harmful chemicals. So Helly Hansen created Lifa Infinity, a waterproof and breathable membrane made through sustainable textile engineering and development.

To get a closer look at what goes into the membrane, we asked Philip about the materials used in their clothing, specifically their Lifa Infinity Pro™ technology, and what the brand has been doing to eliminate chemicals from their manufacturing processes.

Q: What chemicals have you eliminated from Helly Hansen products?

A: We’ve managed to remove quite a lot of chemicals from our Lifa Infinity Pro™ products, thanks to Helly Hansen’s dedicated Research and Development team that has spent considerable time examining the construction and materials involved in making our garments. By innovating our Lifa Infinity Pro™ technology, we have managed to eliminate:

 • All additives and dyestuff related to the conventional wet dyeing process
 • DWR (water repellent) chemicals
 • All VOCs (solvents) which are used usually for gluing together the layers (2 Layer and 3 Layer) fabrics
 • All VOCs (like MEK and DMF) and PFCs, which are used usually used during the production of membranes

Q: What is Lifa®, and what separates it from the host of other 'advanced' materials out there?

A: Lifa® is a hydrophobic yarn technology. The biggest benefit is that the Lifa® fibre sheds water which allows us to create the Lifa Infinity Pro™ technology without adding any chemical treatment to the face fabric. The fibre can only be dyed using a solution dye process that reduces water consumption, which also keeps the colours looking crisper, longer. Lifa® technology is now a big part of Helly Hansen’s line of baselayers for men, women, and kids.

Q: How did you come to the idea to eliminate chemicals? Was it challenging?

A: Our overall goal is to reduce the impact of our brand - and we knew that the great performance and environmental attributes of our Lifa® technology could be used to create a revolutionary waterproof and breathable textile, without adding any chemicals.

Whenever chemicals are used, there is also a lot of water and energy used, as well as wastewater treatment and air purification involved, so our ecological footprint is already improved by this reduction of resources. But by eliminating chemicals and these processes, we also make it easier for ourselves and our customers to recycle these products in the future.

Since many of these chemicals also have favourable effects on the fabric (soft hand feel, easy care, longevity, colour fastness), we ran into some challenges during the innovation and construction of acceptable, wearable fabrics. But we persevered and created something that no one had done before (and that we are still the only brand using), which is not only found in baselayers, but also award-winning shell jackets and insulated midlayers, for example.

Q: How do you maintain advanced innovations while eliminating chemicals?

A: Making a more sustainable, more environmentally friendly material is an advanced innovation. Sustainability, ecology and social responsibility are our focus areas now and we’re continuously looking to improve on each of these important areas. We believe this is where advanced innovations will have the most important impact in the outdoor industry.

Helly Hansen believes that when it comes to creating the highest-performing products, sustainable design should be prioritized, not sacrificed. They’ve demonstrated this through their efforts to remove chemicals from their manufacturing process, and the creation of their advanced Lifa Infinity Pro™ technology.

When you’re planning your outdoor adventures, you shouldn’t have to choose between reliable and responsible. If you want the confidence that comes with advanced technical features – and the confidence that you’re making a difference in your garments’ environmental impact – check out our wide selection of Helly Hansen products that feature Lifa® technology.

Outerknown: A Sea Change in the Clothing Industry https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/outerknown-clothing-industry/ https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/outerknown-clothing-industry/#respond Tue, 20 Sep 2022 18:29:49 +0000 https://altitude-blog.com/?p=122571 Founded by a surfing legend and industry veteran, Outerknown proves that responsible fashion is no longer a myth. The brand takes pride in the sustainable and effortlessly-stylish clothing it designs, but its real goal is to achieve perfect circularity.

The post Outerknown: A Sea Change in the Clothing Industry appeared first on Altitude Sports.

]]>

The first collection designed by Outerknown in 2015 never saw the light of day: it simply didn’t live up to the uncompromising environmental demands of the young company. So yeah, you could say the Australian brand, founded by surfing legend Kelly Slater and industry veteran John Moore, is serious about sustainability. From the very beginning, Outerknown has been committed to protecting the environment and supporting fair labour – and strives to continue creating the most sustainable practices possible.

Many apparel and equipment companies – as well as businesses in other industries – have made a commitment to the environment, and are shifting their practices to increase sustainability.

But to really understand Outerknown, you have to visualize the opposite: a sustainability company that just so happens to design clothes. The very foundation of the company is rooted in a total commitment to sustainability – and they’re the first clothing brand to be based on this principle.

Outerknown is synonymous with environmental protection and responsible working conditions. In its seven years of existence to date, the brand has prevented 1,300 pieces of clothing from ending up in the landfill, and 7,000 workers have been supported through Fair Trade USA.

Making products that last starts with the materials that go into them. Outerknown’s casual, beach-day-ready clothing is made from 90% organic, recycled or reclaimed fibres. Their process to achieve this includes utilizing recycled factory scraps, as well as recycled polyester and nylon, which helps to reduce synthetic waste in our oceans. What’s more, their cashmere assortment contains their Reimagine line, which is made from 95% recycled cashmere, sourced from a combination of pre and post-consumer garments and scraps. By innovating and paying close attention to the fabrics that go into their designs, the brand creates timeless, durable styles that can be repaired, reused, and resold.

Outerknown is on its way to achieving full circularity by 2030. Through designing products with regenerative or recycled materials, implementing ways to extend product circulation, and establishing resale, repair and recycling programs, the brand is confident that 100% of its production will be circular by 2030

Outerknown also believes that true sustainability starts with transparency. So when it comes to manufacturing its garments, the brand seeks out makers who share the desire to take climate action. Mapping 100% of its supply chain is Outerknown’s priority, and it strives to share every step of its journey with its customers. On its website, the brand describes its relationship with its different suppliers, and allows you to look at all of its facilities through the Open Apparel Registry (OAR).

Sustainability and circularity is one of Outerknown’s priorities, but crafting responsible garments also means creating fair working conditions for the people who make them. Along with increased transparency into garment, fabric, yarn, and raw material suppliers, Outerknown seeks to protect more workers in its supply chain and implement fair compensation strategies.

Outerknown wants to put people first. Through an elaborate code of conduct that supports the standards of its fair labour program, the brand continually works to improve the lives of its workers and advance their rights, by maintaining good relationships with its suppliers, improving its purchasing practices, and aiming to implement a cost-of-living wage throughout its supply chain.

Following this responsible manufacturing process, Outerknown wants circularity to prevail even after an item has arrived in the customer’s hands. That’s why it has a designated section on its website for buying and selling used, gently-worn Outerknown pieces. We all have that one shirt, sweater, or pair of pants that we haven’t worn as much as we thought we would. We keep it at the back of the closet, thinking someday the right occasion will come, but…it never does. So why not do some recycling to let someone else enjoy it?

By incorporating all these responsible initiatives into their business, Outerknown is doing more than creating durable, sustainable (and super stylish!) products. It’s inspiring a new generation of manufacturing. At least, that’s the brand’s goal. The clothing industry is harmful, and it needs new, bold innovations and circular models to move to a more sustainable future.

“We recognize that the sustainability challenges we face can’t be solved alone. We invite other organizations to join us as we pioneer a future where apparel contributes to a world that thrives, not just survives.”

The young company knows that the model it’s putting forward is not consistent with industry practices over the past few decades. It understands that the problems it’s addressing are systemic and cannot be solved on a stand-alone basis. This is why Outerknown aims to constantly increase its partnerships, in order to create more innovative business models, which will in turn challenge unsustainable conventions and practices for the planet.

We all want a world where the waters are pure. Where the beaches are long and idyllic, free of waste. So does Outerknown. And it’s taking the right steps to get there.

Smartwool and ZQRX merino wool https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/smartwool-zqrx-merino-wool/ https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/smartwool-zqrx-merino-wool/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 14:50:42 +0000 https://altitude-blog.com/?p=110864 Smartwool is working toward regenerative and climate-positive wool by 2030. To help achieve this goal, the brand is investing in ZQRX, a regenerative wool platform developed by New Zealand Merino. Let’s dig deeper to find out what exactly is behind ZQRX wool, and how it is harvested by the people involved.

ZQRX wool growers not only produce the highest quality, most ethical wool in the world, they also work to give more than they take from the natural world, the animals living in that world, and the human communities interacting with it.

Growers use a new platform called the Regenerative Index to help them measure and improve how much they give back as they restore waterways, protect native species, offset carbon, and enhance local communities.

ZQRX wool is essentially a recipe for how we might produce and consume things in the future where products will not only change our lives for the better, they will change our entire world for the better by giving a little more than they take. There are three key themes to the process.

1. Regenerative inputs and outputs

Regenerative inputs and outputs are defined by New Zealand Merino as giving a little more than they take in respect to the environment, the animal life within that environment, and the people and human communities interacting with that environment. To measure this, New Zealand Merino designed a new platform called the Regenerative Index. Growers use the index to help them measure and improve how much they give back as they restore waterways, protect native species, offset carbon and enhance local communities.

2. Technology that serves nature

Where nature has traditionally served technology, technology is used to serve nature by automating data collection and processing requirements that sit behind the index.

3. Positive human action

This is a shift from Talking Action to Taking Action and comprises two essential groups of ‘actionists’.

 • ZQRX wool growers

These are the ZQRX wool growers who are interacting with the natural world on your behalf each day at the grassroots level i.e. restoring waterways, protecting native species, offsetting carbon, and enhancing local communities.

 • ZQRX brands

These are our world-leading brand partners who are championing and celebrating growers’ efforts with end-users on a daily basis.

Let’s meet a couple of people who are raising ZQRX wool in New Zealand.

Kate Cocks – Mt Nicholas Station, Queenstown, New Zealand

Mt Nicholas Station is a 40,000 hectare (100,000 acre), high-country merino station on the shores of Lake Wakatipu near Queenstown. The property is owned and run by Kate and Jack Cocks, who believe in working with nature and farming with a light touch.

On Mt Nicholas, they don’t measure sheep per acre, they measure acres per sheep. The sheep spends summers in the high alpine. In autumn, a 10-day muster by horseback and foot brings the sheep down from the snowline to pastures which have had months to recover.

Kate and Jack Cocks run the Station on hydroelectricity generated from overflow from their own protected wetlands. An amazing example of working with nature to give more than you take.

Grant Barbara – Glenburn, Canterbury, New Zealand

Grant and Cheryl Barbara farm Glenbourne near Waiau in North Canterbury. Grant calls himself a farmer as well as an environmentalist – he has been using regenerative techniques like direct drilling pasture for more than a decade.

When a major faultline ruptured through the property in 2016, an insurance shortfall left the Barbaras looking for ways to reduce costs. They removed commercial fertiliser and ramped up their efforts in soil health. Grant now says he is primarily farming the soil – with everything else a by-product of what’s happening under the ground. He’s seen year-on-year improvements in topsoil quality and depth and this has, in turn, brought improvements to pasture and animal health.

If you ask people why they go hiking they would probably come up with different answers. Some would paint a nostalgic picture from their childhood, walking up a hill with their grandparents picking up treasures such as leaves, heart-shaped stones and berries. Others would remember the first mountain top crossed off their bucket list. Some would emphasise the peace and tranquility they get when breathing fresh air in a beautiful scenery. Not to mention connections made when going on a hike together.

Norrøna Now and Tomorrow

As an outdoor company founded on love for nature, premium quality, and long-lasting products, environmental responsibility has been in Norrøna’s DNA since the beginning. Norrøna has a long-term plan made up of many objectives, to the year 2029 and beyond.

The 2029 goals are about reducing the use of resources, reusing everything possible, and recycling whatever can not be reused. It is a holistic approach towards improvement, and engaging in industry-wide collaboration for the sake of the planet and future generations. Through this journey of improvement, Norrøna will reduce carbon emissions so that overall input and output create neutrality.

Areas of Impact

One area of impact is nature preservation. Every year, 1% of all Norrøna total sales are put aside to assist organizations working to promote sustainability and environmentally friendly initiatives. Every purchase you make contributes a little bit to lives and livelihoods all around the globe.

Another is being an active member of the Higg Index, created to serve as a suite of tools for the standardized measurement of value chain sustainability. The index assesses the social and environmental performance of the value chain, and the environmental impacts of products. Brands across the globe and their value chain partners access the tools provided by the Higg software platform, developed by SAC’s technology partner.

But there are more immediate areas of impact where you the consumer might be concerned, tied into one of the most endearing of all outdoor activities: hiking. Here are, for example, important ways in which the all-essential backpack plays a part of Norrøna’s long-term responsibility goals.

Backpacks Made Different

All Norrøna backpacks are made of 100% ECONYL recycled fabrics stemming from nylon waste from landfills and oceans around the world. It’s exactly the same as brand new nylon and can be recycled, recreated and remolded again and again. That means you can create new products and buy new products without having to use new resources.

Part of the regenerated nylon used comes from recycling fishing nets from Norway, an important part of the selection process. Together with the fabric supplier, Norrøna developed materials that met expectations when it comes to looks, quality and performance.

Closing the Loop

ECONYL regenerated nylon is a product contributing to closed-loop manufacturing. Made from waste, it’s infinitely recyclable and can unleash infinite possibilities for makers, creators, and consumers. It’s all part of the closed-loop regeneration process and delivery of sustainable products. And it becomes important in allowing not only the present and next generation to enjoy nature fully on a hike, but future ones as well.

NetPlus: Patagonia reels in new, recycled materials https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/patagonia-netplus-sustainable/ https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/patagonia-netplus-sustainable/#respond Thu, 28 Apr 2022 19:56:41 +0000 https://altitude-blog.com/?p=121988 Fishing nets are an incredibly harmful and often overlooked source of pollution in our oceans. But through working with Bureo, Patagonia has been able to recycle some of these nets by transforming them into clothing. Now that's a great catch.

This spring, researchers discovered microplastics in human blood for the first time ever. Of the 22 anonymous donor samples analyzed in the study, 17 contained microplastics – just over 80%. Microplastics, ever-present in our water, are now a part of our diet, as other studies have shown a presence of microplastics in the sea salt we use to season our meals.

But the problem of plastic in our oceans is not a recent one. As much as 8.8 million tons of plastic are carelessly discarded into the sea every year. Recent studies estimate that there are around five thousand billion pieces of plastic floating in our oceans: a figure beyond comprehension. Of this drifting debris, fishing nets are among the most harmful plastic pollutants, killing or seriously injuring more than 650,000 marine animals each year.

Patagonia is concerned about this issue and committed to the global improvement of our environments. Through collaborating with the Californian company Bureo, Patagonia is doing its part, by recycling fishing nets and transforming them into a material called NetPlus, which is not only recycled, but 100% traceable. This inspiring environmental initiative takes place along the west coast of the Americas, between Chile and California.

Plastic fishing nets have no viable alternative. And with fishermen having little or no access to waste management infrastructure, nets are unfortunately mostly left in the water when they’re no longer usable. Though once made of natural biodegradable materials, fishing nets have been manufactured from plastic for the past 40 years. Lighter, stronger and easier to repair, these plastic nets take hundreds of years to decompose, while also degrading the marine environments that fishermen already exploit.

When the co-founders of Bureo realized in 2013 that these nets are made from a highly recyclable raw material, it was a revelation – and they knew exactly who to turn to. Patagonia, after all, is always looking for new ways to reduce its use of raw plastic materials. Fishing nets are perfect: they’ve already completed one useful life cycle, and are given a new life through being turned into fabrics and hat visors

The process is quite simple: Bureo links up with coastal fishing communities throughout South America and buys their unusable nets. The company employs local workers to sort, clean and package the recovered nets, which are then shipped to the company’s partner in southern Chile for recycling. There, the nets are transformed into a raw material that can replace new plastic.

So far, the program has prevented hundreds of tons of nets from being left behind in the ocean, on top of providing additional employment and income for the communities involved.

Ventura, California

Patagonia has been supporting the development of Bureo’s NetPlus since 2016. Today, the material is not only used in hats, but also in Patagonia’s coats and, starting this season, in the famous Baggies shorts (Men’s; Women’s).

Through transforming fishing nets, Patagonia has prevented 149 tons of plastic from contaminating the oceans. The brand states that the hat visors were an obvious use for NetPlus, and easy to make. But the company’s developers had to work with other partners in its supply chain to find ways to chemically transform the plastic from nets into high-quality fabric, so that it could be used in clothing as well. As a result of these efforts, additional tons of nets have been transformed into fabric since the fall of 2021.

In total, Patagonia has recycled over 400 tons of fishing nets. And the brand intends to continue incorporating them into even more of its products in the years to come.

For generations, worn, torn and irreparable fishing nets have been left in the ocean. So much so that these nets now make up nearly 10% of the plastic volume found in our seas.

Using the raw materials extracted from the discarded fishing nets reduces the consumption of new plastic, while also avoiding further water pollution. And as a bonus, the process contributes to growing the local economies of the coastal communities involved, as well as helps to create healthier marine environments. By incorporating NetPlus into a variety of its products, Patagonia is setting a great example for circularity.

Fjällräven: For Today and Tomorrow https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/fjallraven-for-today-and-tomorrow/ https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/fjallraven-for-today-and-tomorrow/#respond Thu, 28 Apr 2022 18:46:57 +0000 https://altitude-blog.com/?p=121796 Sustainability is a priority for many today. For Fjällräven it’s been a priority since 1960. But what exactly is it?

The post Fjällräven: For Today and Tomorrow appeared first on Altitude Sports.

]]>

Above all else, the team at Fjällräven aims to create durable products that are both hardwearing and weather-resistant. If a pair of pants lasts for ten years, the lifetime impact of those pants will be relatively lower than if you buy a pair of pants that wears out after a year. In this case, sustainability and durability are synonymous: the longer you own something of quality, the less shopping you need to do. You’re not only enjoying your pants for many years, through all sorts of treks, hikes, commutes, and whatever other situations you can dream of; but you’re also indirectly reducing consumption and the ensuing pollutants of not only raw materials like fossil-fuel-based fabrics, but of things like shipping, packaging and the typical manufacturer-to-user chain.

The overarching goal is to move towards a circular way of producing and consuming. Many synthetic materials like nylon and polyester are great for outdoor clothing. They are light, quick-drying and easy to take care of. But they are made from oil, a fossil fuel. As soon as we start using recycled versions, the environmental footprint over the lifetime of that material will start to shrink. But what do we do as the demand for recycled materials increases? The recycled materials need to come from some original raw material. So we can’t rely on recycled materials alone.

Considering that approach, creating sustainable products can help make sure our natural landscapes are around for everyone to enjoy. This is the core of Fjällräven’s philosophy, as they prioritize durability in all their designs. Let’s get back to the pants: they are responsibly crafted with a G-1000 Eco fabric that’s easily repairable, and are made for a lifetime of adventure, from city streets to the highest peaks.

G-1000 Eco fabric is basically a better version, sustainability speaking, of Fjällräven’s G-1000 fabric. It’s made from recycled polyester and organic cotton, instead of regular polyester and cotton. Some materials don’t always have an obvious better alternative. But sometimes there are alternatives that are clearly better, sustainability wise; organic cotton and recycled polyester are two of these materials. G-1000 Eco is a ‘step one’ when it comes to more sustainable materials.

Sustainability is a balance, a fine line between the here and now and the future. Fjällräven produces gear that means your next trek is a little drier and your summer camping trip is a little more comfortable. And a growing part of that idea is ensuring future generations can experience those same treks and camping trips, one pair of pants (or shirts, jackets, tops and more) at a time.

Please introduce yourself and tentree.

I’m one of the founders of tentree. I live in North Vancouver, BC, and love outdoor activities that allow for enjoyment of our planet.

tentree makes saving the planet simple by planting 10 trees for every item purchased. These trees provide jobs, restore habitats and clean the air we breathe. With our communities’ help, we aim to plant over 1 billion trees by 2030.

tentree-sustainability-david-luba02

Where do you plant trees, and why in those spots?

We plant trees in over 10 countries around the world. Our most established planting sites are in Madagascar, Senegal, Indonesia, and Nepal. We select planting sites based on both the environmental and social impact the trees will have.

From an environmental perspective, we look at habitat restoration, carbon sequestration, and the impact the trees will have on the local animal species. From a social perspective, we look at the impact job creation will have on impoverished communities along with how the locals will benefit from the restoration project.

The final determining factor is leadership stability in the region. We want to ensure our trees remain healthy long term to create a long-lasting impact.

Are trees really being planted after a purchase?

We guarantee ten trees are planted for every item purchased – after all, it’s the driving force behind our brand and in our name. Our Verified Global Restoration technology – Veritree – audits the trees we plant. It leverages blockchain technology to verify that the trees planted have one single donor, eliminating the potential for a planting organization to double dip and allocate the trees planted to two donors. Veritree also uses on-the-ground cell phone verification to track exactly when, where, and who is planting the trees.

tentree-sustainability-david-luba04
tentree-sustainability-david-luba05

Are the trees planted designated for harvesting?

No. We educate planting communities on their tree benefits, and therefore the local tree planters protect their trees. For example, in Madagascar we’re planting Mangrove trees along the ocean shoreline. These hold the soil together to protect it from erosion. The trees also bring fish back to the area, so the local fishing village has their food source back. In Senegal, we plant mango trees which help feed the locals.

Does the QR code to claim our 10 trees after purchase means we can track our trees in real time?

Yes. By claiming your trees, you can track where they are planted and understand the positive impact your purchase has on our planet. You can then deposit your trees into our impact wallet where you can track your impact real time and understand the impact your trees have over an extended period of time.

How can I help plant trees with you?

You can plant trees with tentree by investing in a sustainable tentree product. Another way to plant trees is through our Climate+ program which provides supporters with the opportunity to plant trees without getting a product. To date we have planted over 60 million trees. With support from the tentree community we will plant over 1 billion trees by 2030!
