With the warmer weather rolling in, we are excited to get outsidebut wearing what, exactly? Tops and bottoms are simple enough, but like everyone, we’re looking for the best spring sneakers. We want our kicks to be on-trend, comfy, and durable. And maybe a bit of running-centric versatility, in case we want to sweat off that backyard barbecue.

Faced with all these choices and criteria, we thought better to enlist some real style pros for tips. So, who better than two Altitude Sports Buyers to tell us what they’re wearing this spring and summer? We asked Sigrid and Theodora to choose their top spring sneakers, explain why they chose them, and touch on trends and styles you should be looking out for too.

We set our sights on the island of Hokkaido, in northern Japan, renowned for its immaculate powder and incredible snow quality. From ski touring to resort skiing, here’s how to organize a trip like ours, with our notes and itinerary.

The two-week itinerary

Days 1-3: Departure from Montreal and arrival in Tokyo. We took two days to visit the megalopolis and soak up Japanese culture—all while recovering from jet lag.

Day 4: Departure from New Chitose Airport (south of the city of Sapporo) to pick up our rental car and drive to Furano, a city with typical Japanese charm–often compared to Niseko ten years ago–in the heart of Hokkaido. In the evening: a bit of skiing to stretch our legs.

Day 5: Skiing in Furano, a destination that’s becoming increasingly popular with the tourist surge from Niseko. If you want to get there before the crowds, it’s now or never!

Days 6-7: Ski touring days at Tokachidake (10 km, 1110 m) and Furano-dake (7 km, 750 m). Incredible powder, massive open faces; it was an unforgettable experience. And to round off the day, the Fukiage Onsen (thermal bath), a great, well-known Japanese tradition that we quickly became fans of!

Day 8: Departure from Furano to our next destination: Lake Tōya. Exploration on foot of the resort and Hirafu Niseko village.

Day 9: Ski touring day at Shiribetsu-dake (11 km, 1000 m). This volcano is a prized backcountry destination because we can ride down different faces, depending on the snow conditions (get there early!). The views from another volcano, Mount Yōtei, are also impressive. We finished the day at the Makkari Onsen, which we visited every day from then on!

Day 10: Skiing at Kiroro, a real favourite of the trip for its fantastic off-piste terrain. There’s also plenty of ski touring to be done if you want to spend a lot of time in Kiroro.

Day 11: Skiing at Niseko, an incredible experience despite the tourist crowds. This is THE mountain that receives the most snow, with an average of 13 m per season. For off-piste enthusiasts, go for the famous Gate 3 to the summit (allow 30 minutes for bootpacking after the last chairlift). What we didn’t like: With the mountain’s development, prices have soared and we’ve lost the typical Japanese charm around the mountain. It’s very touristy. We would have liked to have spent more time there, but the top of the mountain and access to the bowls are only open for a day, and Niseko becomes very quickly tracked out.

Days 12-13: Skiing at Rusutsu. Protected from the winds, this village is an excellent Plan B when the wind picks up in Niseko. It’s very easy to navigate off-piste, unlike the other mountains where we constantly had to stop and check our position on FATMAP. A must: Mount Isola!

Day 14: Return to Montreal.

Japan itinerary map

To keep in mind for this trip

 • To really enjoy Japan’s powder, you need to go off-piste. In fact, every resort has accessible off-piste zones that lead back to the lifts—no need for skins.
 • Walk around between Furano and Niseko to enjoy a variety of experiences. In the Niseko area, opt for accommodation at Lake Toya—much cheaper!
 • Plan on at least eight days of skiing to get the most out of it.
 • Book a tour guide to help you enjoy the best powder, away from the crowds.
 • We booked at the end of November for our trip in January, and even then it was almost too late. Book early, but it’s also worth noting that you can take advantage of excellent sales during the Black Friday period (we saved $800).
 • In addition to avalanches, rivers and streams that don’t freeze pose a real threat to skiers. Take extra care in gullies and creek crossings.
 • Make sure you’re fully equipped to protect yourself in the event of an avalanche.

This region’s stunning beauty flourishes in the snow, so if you’re looking for an antidote to routine and you can spare a few days, we couldn’t recommend heading out there to enjoy winter activities more.

The post 3-Day Winter Getaway in the Outaouais Region appeared first on Altitude Sports.

]]>

In collaboration with Tourisme Outaouais, we’re sharing the itinerary for our winter getaway to the Outaouais region, from Gatineau to Montebello. We’re there to discover the joys of the season with a 3-day plan that features fat biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, winter running, in addition to foodie stops, and charming chalets to stay in. Because yes, the Outaouais has it all!

Departure to the Outaouais

The Outaouais region is a top destination for enjoying winter to the fullest. Even after a long workweek, it’s just a 2.5-hour drive from Montreal, making it an easy getaway—especially when you’ve got good company to accompany you for the trip. The best way to maximize your experience is to take a Friday off from work, and head out on Thursday evening to give yourself the best time to unwind and enjoy the area’s offerings.

That said, if the week has left you completely wiped out, you can just as easily set off Friday morning. The Outaouais is practically Montreal’s neighbour.

Where to Stay?

While we’re in the Outaouais, we choose to stay at Kenauk Nature in Montebello. Only 1.5 hours from Montreal, the chalets offered here can accommodate anywhere from 4 to 19 people, making them the perfect spot for any occasion, whether you’re heading out as two couples or a larger group. Nestled within one of the largest private nature reserves in North America, Kenauk Nature’s chalets are all eco-friendly and offer a true escape into the wild. As environmentally conscious people ourselves, we admire the preservation efforts spearheaded by the Kenauk Institute—it’s just another reason why we chose this incredible area.

Day 1: Fat biking in Montebello

The first morning of vacation kicks off with a delicious homemade breakfast before heading out to explore the historic property of patriot Louis-Joseph Papineau with Montebello Mountain Bike. With over 30 km of biking trails winding along the Ottawa River, the views are absolutely stunning! About halfway through, we pause to enjoy some hot chocolate we packed in a thermos in our backpack. Warming our hands around the cup, we take in the scenery before diving back into the heart of this enchanting forest.

To make the most of the adventure while staying warm—especially during hot chocolate breaks—we choose moisture-wicking clothing, like merino wool garments. This material keeps us warm while efficiently managing excess moisture because sweating in winter can render the experience less enjoyable, and we don’t want that, do we?

We’re also incredibly grateful for our padded cycling shorts, which keep us comfortable throughout the ride and ensure we can enjoy the rest of the weekend pain-free (cyclists might know what we mean). And our polarized sunglasses? A necessity to help keep the midday sun from reflecting into our eyes–a real recipe for snow blindness. If the sky’s overcast, we stash them in the backpack—but at least we’re prepared for whatever the day brings.

It’s with burning legs that we finish our bike ride. Between the activity and the cold, we feel a bit of gnawing in our stomachs, and head straight to Bistro Montebello, a charming restaurant famous for its wood-fired pizza. In a warm and friendly atmosphere, we share pizzas and salads, pairing them with a refreshing beer. Feeling fully satisfied, we head back to the chalet to unwind with a good book by the fire.

Day 2: Exploring Gatineau Park

We pack our bags and leave Montebello bright and early, heading to Gatineau Park, the second most visited park in Canada. Before setting out to explore the trails, a brunch stop is essential to fuel up, and our choice inevitably lands on Biscotti et cie. This charming restaurant, located opposite of Gatineau Park, offers exquisite breakfasts and delicious coffee. We also make sure to stock up on tasty snacks to slip into our backpacks—little rewards we plan to savour throughout our hike.

Photo: Biscotti & cie

Over a coffee, we take our time choosing a route from among the park’s 50 trails, carefully selecting the length and difficulty that suits us best. With a cross-country ski network totalling 200 km of groomed trails, there’s no shortage of options! Once ready, we strap on our cross-country skis and venture into the heart of the park, enjoying the excellent trail conditions. Every now and then, we challenge ourselves with little goals, just to get the heart rate up a bit!

We could just as easily have opted for snowshoeing—Gatineau Park offers 15 trails spanning 80 kilometres. Whether it’s cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, we make sure to wear warm, breathable clothing to avoid freezing halfway through, just as we would for cycling.

Pro Tip: Before heading out on a trail, research the different routes based on their difficulty, the hike duration, and the viewpoints. Plan your outing accordingly to avoid, for instance, tackling a 15 km trail when you would’ve preferred a 7 km loop.

Rainy day?

Indulge in relaxation at the Nordik Spa-Nature, North America’s largest spa with a world-class saltwater floatation pool. On par with floating in the Dead Sea itself, it’s a must-visit experience.

Where to stay?

Spend the night in one of the cozy Terre & Neige forest cabins, charming cabins that are both snug and rustic. It’s the perfect spot to relax by the wood stove after a day of outdoor fun. With just 48 hours’ notice, you can even reserve a gourmet dinner! Opting for this service means you don’t have to venture out in the evening; instead, a food basket is delivered between 5 and 6 p.m., complete with all the necessary ingredients and a step-by-step guide to whip up a festive meal featuring local products. Simple and delicious—we’re in love.

Day 3: Running & Bagels

Last day, we’re heading out for a little winter run along the Ottawa River, just to get moving and take in some of the city’s scenery and trails before hitting the road back to Montreal.

After the run, it’s time to treat ourselves for the last time, and we head to the very first bagel shop we come across on our way out of the Outaouais. Bobino Bagel has quickly become the go-to place for amazing bagels in the region. Whether you buy them individually, by the dozen, or as a sandwich, you definitely should consider stopping in before heading back to Montreal. They boast the best bagels in town (and it’s hard to disagree)! Good thing they don’t have a location in Montreal, or the Fairmount vs St-Viateur debate would have a new contender.

Conclusion

With bagels in hand, we hit the road, already planning our next weekend in the region. Luckily for us, this trip isn’t too far, so there’s no reason not to return to the Outaouais region at a moment’s notice. With a wide range of winter activities, delicious food stops, and charming accommodations that offer a true immersion in nature, there’s no shortage of options—and we still have so much left to explore. So, if you’re planning to visit as a couple, with friends, or family, Outauoais has something to offer for everyone.

If you want to plan a trip for yourselves, check out Tourisme Outaouais’ website, which offers plenty of helpful information. See you there!

We'll take you to the upper Gaspé Peninsula for the length of a long weekend.

The post Winter Road Trip in Gaspésie: 4-Day Itinerary appeared first on Altitude Sports.

We’re lucky here in Quebec to have such an expansive playground that caters to outdoor enthusiasts of all levels, no matter the season—summer or winter. Once the breathtaking autumn colours fade, we look toward the first snowflakes, hoping they’ll turn into impressive snowfalls so we can dive into our favourite winter sports around the stunning landscapes.

If you find yourself looking to break away this winter and catch some of the best snow conditions in the province—why not treat yourself to a little getaway to Gaspésie for an extended stay?

We do just that every year. A winter road trip that brings my friends and me together to fully embrace the season, spending our days exploring outside and ending them with a delicious meal featuring the region’s signature dishes. In short, it’s a road trip to warm the soul!

How Much Time Should You Plan to Visit Gaspésie?

Gaspésie is vast. This land of ocean and mountains is divided into eight regions, each offering picturesque villages, impressive landscapes, and a wealth of outdoor activities.

The sheer size of the area is captivating—weeks wouldn’t be enough to explore all its attractions. While you could easily spend extended periods there without getting bored, just a few days, plus one if you can manage, are enough to fill your memory with unforgettable experiences.

In collaboration with Tourisme Gaspésie, we’re sharing a 4-day winter road trip in Haute-Gaspésie. This region, stretching from Cap-Chat to Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine, is home to the iconic Chic-Choc Mountains—Quebec’s ultimate backcountry skiing playground. Perfect for winter sports enthusiasts, this journey promises an ideal mix of adventure and discovery, showcasing a stunning region where extraordinary experiences are enjoyed with simple charm.

Day 1: Heading to Haute-Gaspésie

From Montreal, it’s about an eight-hour drive to Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, the principal town in Haute-Gaspésie. We stake on the road ahead, listening to our favourite songs, but more importantly, to plan out the days ahead while we have the time.

Where to stay?

The one thing we made sure to book in advance was our hotel. We chose a Panora seaside lodge—charming, modern cottages just a few meters from the water, offering amazing views of the sunset. Designed to accommodate up to four people, these lodges come with a private spa and are perfect for a weekend getaway with friends. With their cozy and inviting atmosphere, they feel just like home, making them the ideal spot to unwind after a day exploring the Chic-Choc’s backcountry.

Where to dine?

After indulging in a generous helping of candy on the drive (because what’s a road trip without a stash of gas station sweets?), we stop at Le Malbord Microbrewery for a proper meal. With its relaxed, friendly vibe, it’s the perfect place to relive the day’s adventures over a locally brewed beer. It’s also the ideal setting to finalize our plans for the next day—like deciding exactly when to set our alarms.

Day 2: Skiing at La Vallée Taconique

Day 2, and we’re off to La Vallée Taconique! The Haute-Gaspésie region is renowned as a backcountry skier’s paradise, and La Vallée Taconique is one of its most sought-after destinations because of the vistas it offers.

This ski area, reserved for intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders, stands out for its two steep slopes and benefits from a microclimate that delivers remarkable snowfall, with an annual average of 600 cm of snow. The conditions are, to put it not so mildly, mind-blowing, with powder so deep it feels like you could float above the snow—a one-of-a-kind experience that’s bound to hook any skier!

After spending the entire morning skinning uphill, our legs are starting to give out, but not ready to call it a day. We decide to treat ourselves in the afternoon by using the lift service. This super convenient option lets us enjoy the snow until nightfall while maximizing our runs.

If you plan to ascend on your own, don’t forget your climbing skins—they’re an absolute must in the Chic-Chocs!

To ensure everything goes smoothly, we always make it a point to get a mountain guide. Exploring the valley with a local expert not only lets us ski with peace of mind but also leads to discovering hidden spots we’d never venture into on our own. Every year, skiing with a guide is one of the highlights of our weekend—a meaningful encounter that lets us experience the mountains in a whole new way.

It’s also possible to explore the backcountry on your own, but be aware that each winter, Gaspésie sees its fair share of avalanches, so be sure to regularly check the current risk levels through Avalanche Québec’s bulletins. And don’t forget to equip yourself with the right gear to ensure your safety!

After an amazing day carving through the fresh powder, we head back toward the seaside lodges at Panora—but not without a stop at Atkins et Frères, a must-visit spot for any seafood lover exploring the Gaspé Peninsula, as noted by Gaspésie Gourmande. This gem is renowned for its seafood specialties, so we stock up on provisions to make a well-deserved appetizer before unwinding in the spa.

Day 3: Snowshoeing at Mont Saint-Pierre

Day 3, and we’re off to explore Station de montagne sur mer de Mont-Saint-Pierre! Layered up like an onion, we strap on our snowshoes and head out for a mountain adventure.

The site offers two groomed trails. The Delta Trail leads to the summit of Mont Saint-Pierre, where you’ll be rewarded with an impressive view of the village and the cove. The second option, the Lynx Trail, is more challenging than the Delta Trail and takes you to the François-Bernèche viewpoint, where the view of the glacial valley is just as spectacular.

Choose your trail based on your energy level, and having done both myself, I can promise you that Mont Saint-Pierre will leave you in awe no matter which path you take.

We usually make our hiking days a bit more laid-back than our skiing days. Sometimes we sleep in and head out for an afternoon excursion, or we get up early for a morning hike and spend the afternoon exploring the area and wandering from shop to shop. Either way, we love grabbing a bite with a view of the sea at Café l’Auberge Amarrée, where we go for breakfast or lunch, depending on when we decide to get up.

Day 4: Back to Montreal

What’s a winter road trip without some sweet treats? To switch things up from candy, we’re indulging our sweet tooth with chocolates from Couleur Chocolat, the economuseum of chocolate-making, on our way back home. With a variety of unique chocolate flavours, we turned the ride into a fun blind taste test game, guessing each flavour—a delicious way to pass the time on the road, accompanied by plenty of laughter!

When to visit Gaspésie this winter?

Unsurprisingly, the best time to visit the Gaspé Peninsula in winter is between January and March. While temperatures can be brisk, the region often boasts record-breaking snowfall in Quebec, with many towns claiming the highest snow accumulations in the province!

These ideal conditions make it the perfect time to fully enjoy your favourite winter activities, whether it’s cross-country skiing, ski touring, downhill skiing, snowshoeing, or hiking.

White Lips

For women looking to get into alpine touring or seasoned adventurers seeking an unforgettable group experience in the heart of the Chic-Chocs, we invite you to check out the White Lips event. This women-only long weekend combines fun and hands-on workshops focused on all things mountain and backcountry adventure. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with other winter enthusiasts!

When: January 23–26, 2025

For: All alpine touring enthusiasts, from beginners to experienced adventurers.

Conclusion

The Vallée Taconique and Mont Saint-Pierre are just two of the many impressive sites in Haute-Gaspésie where you can enjoy winter sports in a magical setting. With its massive snowfalls, Gaspésie National Park boasts over 25 peaks topping above 1,000 meters, along with several alpine trails. It’s no wonder this playground in the mountains sees flocks of winter enthusiasts visiting every year to take advantage of what it has to offer. A winter road trip in Gaspésie has become an annual tradition for us!

Whether you plan it well in advance or decide on a whim based on the weather forecast (plenty of snow ahead!), a road trip is easy to organize and makes for the perfect spontaneous long weekend getaway with friends. All you need is your gear and the open road leading to the rugged shores of the Gaspé Peninsula.

Tourisme Gaspésie offers a wealth of useful information to help you plan your visit to the region. For more details, visit their website at www.tourisme-gaspesie.com.

Go Green: icebreakers’s Ethical Initiatives for a Better World https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/icebreaker-sustainability/ https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/icebreaker-sustainability/#comments Wed, 30 Nov 2022 15:36:31 +0000 https://altitude-blog.com/?p=105683 In 2017, icebreaker released its first-ever Transparency Report - the result of the brand's commitment to building an ethical and environmentally friendly business model.

The post Go Green: icebreakers’s Ethical Initiatives for a Better World appeared first on Altitude Sports.

]]>

The ultimate expert in regard to merino wool, icebreaker manages its business and green initiatives from its New Zealand headquarters. We met with the brand in 2018 for a tour of its facilities and to visit its partner farms in order to learn more about the famous Transparency Reports that the brand has been publishing since 2017.

icebreaker’s Transparency Report is more than a hundred pages long, describing in detail all the stages of production for its garments. This includes sales figures, the results of the various audits icebreaker has undergone, its successes and failures, and even its future objectives.

Not surprisingly, icebreaker’s Transparency Report has caused a small revolution in the industry.

Between long-term partnerships with farmers and the ethical and respectful treatment of nature and sheep, icebreaker is always working to make advancements in terms of green initiatives, with one of the most important being its journey toward being 100% plastic-free.

100% plastic-free by 2023

icebreaker first launched this initiative in 2018. At the time, 84% of the brand’s fabrics were already plastic-free. While that may be good, it wasn’t enough for a company that is always striving to be better. Plastic is one of the materials that is the most harmful to the environment, as icebreaker is well aware, and the plastic used in clothing, in the form of plastic microfibres, is not always taken into account. Since we can’t see the plastic in our clothing it is easy to ignore that it’s there, however, it still ends up in the water in our washing machines, in lakes and rivers, and eventually, it even makes its way into the ocean. Pollution truly knows no borders.

Because of this, icebreaker’s goal is to be 100% plastic-free and as of 2022, 95% of the plastic used by the brand is. There are no natural alternatives that are truly effective enough to replace the remaining 5%. The remaining plastic is what gives the clothing its stretch and durability. As we still want our clothes to be comfortable and durable so that they can be kept for years without needing to be replaced, the use of this plastic is still unfortunately necessary. However, icebreaker will not stop until they reach their goal of being 100% plastic free and are pushing towards finding alternative materials for the last 5%.

Microplastics from clothing are found in the world’s seas and create an almost invisible form of pollution that affects the entire food chain. The use of plastic in the textile industry must be reduced as much as possible.

A Whole Range of Natural Clothing for FW2

More and more, consumers are interested in where the clothes they buy, the food they eat, and the goods around them come from. While labels and certifications help to guide the eco-conscious, few brands can boast the same transparency as icebreaker. By choosing to wear merino clothing, you’re not only choosing to go natural, you’re also encouraging the industry to embrace more eco-friendly and ethical practices.

icebreaker has also taken the time to study the environmental impact of producing clothing made entirely of merino wool. Knowing the consequences of its production allows icebreaker to take initiatives to minimize carbon emissions.

Designed to inspire consumers to go natural and enjoy their surroundings, icebreaker’s fall/winter 2022 collection features new products that are lightweight, high-performing, comfortable, ultra-soft against the skin, and made from plant and merino wool. With underwear, baselayers and coats, there’s plenty to choose from.

FW2022 Collection

Merino Wool: How Does It Work

We probably don’t need to keep bringing up the merits of icebreaker’s merino wool, but we’re going to do it anyways. Merino is the natural fibre that everyone is talking about, and for good reason. It repels odours really well (seriously, you’ll even be odour-free after going for a run), is super soft against the skin (unlike the wool that is found in traditional sweaters), and it’s temperature regulating (so when you’re hot it keeps you cool, and when you’re cold it will retain body heat).

It’s all thanks to the natural and fascinating adaptability of Merino sheep. Their wool protects them from the scorching sun of the Southern Alps in New Zealand while at the same time also protecting them from snow and blizzards. While they’re great on their own, icebreaker’s merino garments are even better when they are part of a multi-layer system.

For its FW22 collection, icebreaker offers a complete range of products for any activity. With base layers, mid layers and outer shells, it is a whole multi-layer system made from natural fibres that allows you to enjoy nature while having a less harmful impact.

Ethical Practices and Traceability

icebreaker has long been at the forefront of the industry by setting standards for ethical practices. For example, years ago icebreaker banned the technique of mulesing, a practice now illegal in New Zealand, which consists of preventively cutting the natural folds of Merino sheep’s skin to avoid possible larval contamination.

The brand also ensures that its manufacturing facilities are fair, safe, and non-discriminatory work environments.

As with its sheep farmers, icebreaker maintains a direct relationship with all actors involved in the manufacturing of their garments – from the raw material all the way to the final product. Such close collaboration allows the brand to oversee all stages of production in order to make changes that help minimize its carbon footprint.

Burton, Merrell, Saucony, Columbia, Smartwool…what do these well-known outdoor brands have in common? They were all founded – or are currently run – by women. We know the names, but we’re sometimes in the dark when it comes to the fact that much of their history has been written by females. There’s Gert Boyle, famous matron behind Columbia’s seal of approval; Jennifer McLaren, the power broker at the helm of Smartwool; and many others who by taking an active role are changing the rules of the game. The contributions of women need to be highlighted more than ever. It is 2022, after all, and a woman’s place is at the forefront.

Here is a collection of products from carefully selected brands meeting the criteria as outlined above. Each company stands out for the quality of their products and their modern, responsible values, in perfect harmony with today’s world.

By Women

Celebrating diversity and game-changers, one piece of clothing at a time.

Houdini

“Houdini, save us!”

This was the cry from a group of explorers who had gotten stuck in the crevasses of the famous Tacul Pyramid near Chamonix. Among them was Lotta Giornofelice, contemplating their precarious situation, and joining in the chorus imploring the genius of escape artistry to deliver them to safety. This is also the basis of the Houdini company, founded by the former mountain guide and ski instructor Giornofelice.

The first collection was launched in Sweden in 1993. Twenty-five years later, its minimalist, ultra-professional look and eco-responsibility still appeal. Giornofelice has always stressed quality over quantity, and sustainability over fast fashion. From lifestyle clothing to adventure-centric jackets and base layers, Houdini changes the fashion industry, offering understated pieces that are incredibly durable, comfortable and move with you.

Lune Active

Here is recent addition to Altitude Sports, and one of our favourite ways to go from the yoga studio to the office to the bar. While most of us are still telecommuting, we can’t think of a moment when something from the dutch company doesn’t belong – tele-meetings included.

Lune Active is a collaboration between Ashley Samwel and Lisa de Vries. With a healthy, active, urban lifestyle in mind, they create pieces that best represent the athleisure category. Based in a studio in Amsterdam, the collection explores simplicity and clean lines through responsibly-sourced materials. Comfort plus ethics – Lune Active is a new brand that is well worth a look.

Dovetail Workwear

If there is anything that speaks to me more than eco-friendly fashion and the genius of women in the clothing industry, it’s gardening. Working the land, kneeling in nutrient-rich soil and mud, watching broccoli, cucumbers and radishes grow…frankly, I can’t get enough of it. That’s where a brand like Dovetail Workwear, launched by three Pacific Northwest gardeners, sparks my interest.

How do you encourage women in a traditionally male field? By making stretchy, durable pieces that are designed for their bodies, that don’t lose their utility and functionality over repeated uses, and even offer an undeniable touch of femininity. That’s the mission of Dovetail Workwear. And believe me, it works.

to those now run by women.

Veja

Veja co-founders Sebastien Kopp and Francois Ghislain Morillion appointed a new CEO in 2019: Laure Browne. Her goal? To spread the word about a brand that shares her values, the word about a company that already shows out on the eco-responsible scene.

Organic cotton and rubber purchased from Amazonian co-ops, recycled plastic and polyester bottles, certified manufacturing and ethical approach – Veja is anything but idle and as far from greenwashing as you can get. Its modern and trendy sneakers go with everything from skirts to blue jeans.

June Swimwear

Founded and run by a team of women, Montreal-based June Swimwear has been turning heads with swimwear that makes women want to travel, dream and create memories for a lifetime.

Between beach, sun, and surf, June Swimwear mixes creativity with responsibly-sourced fibres, aiming (successfully) at adorable pieces that dive into summer. For beach wear that lasts and offers near-perfect summer style, don’t need to look any further.

Diversity is good, and even better when done right, not promoted for the sake of it. This collection of women-owned and women-led brands is important to us at Altitude Sports: it respects our corporate values, paves the way for a more equal and responsible future, and shows everyone that women have a place at the forefront.

These companies, whether they make clothes for everyone or just for women, deserve to be promoted and given their rightful place in the modern sustainable fashion industry.

Thule Spring Roller Review https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/thule-spring-roller-review/ https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/thule-spring-roller-review/#respond Thu, 05 May 2022 13:26:21 +0000 https://altitude-blog.com/?p=106607 Finding the perfect stroller for your child isn’t easy - you need something that sets up quickly, folds down compactly, and keeps your child comfortable and safe. The Thule Spring Roller delivers on convenience and safety, making it the only stroller you’ll need for your kids.

The post Thule Spring Roller Review appeared first on Altitude Sports.

]]>

There isn’t a more convenient stroller than the Thule Spring Roller on the market. Its compact design makes daily life easier for busy parents. The folding mechanism makes it easy to assemble and fold up and store. Within minutes, you’ll have your stroller popped up and ready to ride through the city.

Parents and kids alike love the comfy and smooth ride thanks to big thick tires. The swivelling front wheel also makes it easy to maneuver down crowded sidewalks and city streets. If you’re looking for a high-quality baby stroller, you can’t go wrong with the Spring Roller by Thule.

Thule Spring Roller

Aside from its modern and sleek design, the Thule Spring Roller is a flexible and dependable stroller. It’s compact and lightweight, so it doesn’t take up much space when it’s not in use and easily fits in the trunk. It’s also colourful and customizable with add-on accessories like seat liners, protective covers, cup holders, and more.

It features a spacious basket underneath for easy storage of baby bottles, groceries, or light clothing. It’s also not complicated to pack up like other strollers, which is perfect for on-the-go parents. The Thule Spring Roller is suitable for kids from 6 months until they’re 29 kg, which is perfect when you’re maneuvering through the city with a small child. Since it’s compatible with child car seats, it’s suitable for babies 0 to 6 months old as well.

That being said, the five-point harness is a little tricky - you have to click all four clips separately into one buckle, which is not like an easy single strap setup. However, your child will be more secure with the five-point harness. Another downside is the price, but it’s adjustable and holds a lot of weight, so it can last children from infancy to toddler ages. Some users have reported that the wheels squeak when going over bumps, which can be avoided by not taking the roller on rugged terrain.

Price: 0.00$

Brand Name | Product Type

Why Should You Consider the Thule Spring Roller

One-Hand Folding!

Any parent with toddlers knows that their little ones can be pretty active! The Thule Spring Roller’s easy latch system folds out with one hand, leaving the other hand free for carrying your child. Just insert the wheels and hood into the stroller, then you’re good to go. It’s a game-changer if you’re used to cumbersome, complicated strollers. To fold the stroller, lift the seat panel and pull the lever right up to collapse it.

There’s also an adjustable handlebar that can be changed for different heights. That means you can use it as your child gets older or for multiple children of different ages. The step-in footrest also makes it easy for older children to climb into the stroller by themselves.

Compact Frame & Size

Say goodbye to heavy strollers that hurt your back. The Thule Spring Roller weighs only 9.5 kg, which means transporting it is a breeze. Whether you’re going to the zoo, strolling through the park, or out on an adventure, this stroller won’t weigh you down or get in your way.

Seat & Comfort

The “stabilized seating” in the Spring Roller is perfect for active toddlers, giving them more comfort and security. The shock system also helps to maintain an exceptionally smooth ride. Another bonus is that you can add a car seat easily – there’s no need to wake up sleeping babies when transferring them from the car to the stroller.

Recliner

If your child is often sleepy, they’ll love the deep recline on the Spring Roller. The reclining seat is perfect for on-the-go naps and provides relaxing comfort as you stroll through the city. It allows your child to sit upright or lean back comfortably. Parents can adjust the recline with the single strap system that provides infinite angles.

Harness

As we mentioned earlier, the five-point harness adds optimum safety and security for your child. It’s relatively easy to click into place but near impossible for children to figure out. Parents won’t have to worry about active children getting loose or falling out of the stroller, which adds to peace of mind.

The Wheels

The trademark three-wheel system makes the stroller super agile. The front-wheel swivels for easy maneuvering, but it also locks in place to stay steady on slippery sidewalks. The thick foam-filled, no-puncture tires also help to ensure a smooth ride, no matter the weather.

Sun Protection

With a convenient and beautiful canopy, your child will be protected from harmful rays. The canopy has UPF 50+ UV protection, and there’s a huge mesh window with a magnetic flap for keeping your child cool. The see-through mesh window lets your baby see out of it and enjoy the weather, and parents can also keep an eye on their children too.

The oversized canopy is adjustable, with a built-in extendable sunshade that shields from the low afternoon sun and wind. You can also fold the canopy up to give your child a full outside view.

Storage & Weight Capacity

One of the most impressive features of the Spring Roller is that it folds compactly and is self-standing for easy storage. The stroller also features a roomy open-basket under the seat, which has a large 21-litre capacity

It takes up limited space, so it can easily fit in a Hatchback or compact car. The 29 kg weight capacity is suitable for older children, so parents can use it for several years.

See What Others Are Saying

Parents are raving about the Thule Spring Roller. Here are a few reviews from Altitude Sports customers:

“Nice construction; folds easily into a small package, and the locking front wheel makes snowy sidewalks a breeze!” -Jason C.

“Great compact design. Easy to maneuver and lightweight to fold up. Works well with the adaptors for [the] Maxi Cosi car seat that we purchased.” -Micheal M.

“Stroller is very easy to use and best of it, it is very easy to fold and store. Love the overall design, very sturdy.” -Simrandeep N.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Thule Spring Stroller a jogging stroller?

Unlike the Thule Urban Glide or Thule Glide, the Spring Stroller isn’t meant for jogging. It can handle lightly cracked sidewalks or short grass, but not sand or bumpy trails.

How is the suspension on the Thule Spring Stroller?

The suspension is sturdy, but only the front wheel can lock into place. For this reason, the Spring Stroller is best used for city strolls and occasional walks on slightly rough terrain.

Final Thoughts on the Thule Spring Roller

If you’re a parent looking for a lightweight, flexible, and dependable stroller, the Thule Spring Roller is for you. Its multitude of features like the adjustable handlebar, sun visor, and compatibility with car seats make it super convenient. Since it’s easy to set up with one hand, transitioning children into the stroller is a breeze!

While it may not be suitable for rough terrain, it’s perfect for urban living. Make your city strolls and errand-running easier with the Thule Spring Roller.

Vallier and Certified Materials https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/vallier-sustainable-brand/ https://kinsta.altitude-sports.com/en/vallier-sustainable-brand/#respond Tue, 22 Mar 2022 01:47:46 +0000 https://altitude-blog.com/?p=115695 Isabel Vinuela, supply chain specialist at Vallier, discusses collections, brand values, and the importance of local manufacturing.

The post Vallier and Certified Materials appeared first on Altitude Sports.

]]>

Altitude Sports: Materials are an omnipresent issue in the clothing industry; specifically, their origins and ecological impact caused by manufacturing processes. What certifications were important for Vallier, and why?

Isabel: My role is to ensure a rigorous selection of raw materials, prioritizing certified fibres and fabrics. These certifications help regulate the textile and clothing industry, and allow us to make informed choices for our products and for the planet.

Some are particularly important to us. The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), for example, provides a framework for the wool industry to ensure best practices in both agriculture and animal welfare. Our merino wool sweaters, such as the Mahone for men or the New Haven turtleneck for women, are RWS certified.

For the insulation of our parkas, such as the Toolo and Eira from the FW21 collection, we always select down that is RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified. This standard ensures that the animals from which the down is sourced are treated ethically.

For cotton, we are now working with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification, one of the world's leading organic fibre companies. It oversees all aspects of cotton production, ensuring ethical standards at both human and environmental levels. Since cotton is an integral part of our clothing production, we make sure to choose a fibre that limits the impact on the planet, like those found in our women's Roxboro and men's Mercier sweatshirts.

Finally, we also make sure to choose recycled materials whenever possible. GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification is the industry standard for traceability and verification of recycled materials like polyester. It is used in our selection of Pertex performance fabrics, found in our Toolo and Eira parkas and Ladner coat.

Pertex

The brand's identity is very Montreal-based, and Vallier is clearly proud of the products in its collection that are made in Canada. Are there plans to produce more locally in future collections?

Absolutely. Making our products locally is a great source of pride, and we aim to increase it over the long term. It encourages the local economy and grows our manufacturing expertise. For the FW21 collection, we have doubled the amount of our products made in Canada, like the Sillery beanie and Limoilou scarf.

vallier-sustainable-brand02

Vallier is also openly disclosing the origins of its products, which is an act that the industry still remains shy about. How important is being transparent to you and what is the nature of your relationship with the people who make Vallier?

It is our mission at Vallier, as a brand and manufacturer, to be transparent about where our products come from and how they are made. As a result, we put an emphasis on both our local expertise as well as the expertise we seek out abroad, like in Asia, for example. We are very proud of each garment, as we spend a lot of time finding the best suppliers and partners. It is imperative that these suppliers and partners share our values, such as respect for workers and our high-quality standards.

With this in mind, we work with Chinese factories to manufacture our technical garments, including our new Ladner jacket for men, made from recycled polyester Pertex Quantum fabric with Primaloft insulation. There is a great deal of know-how in Asia for the manufacturing of this type of clothing, which allows us to offer a very high-quality final product.

How does Vallier inspire its customers to live more ecologically responsible lives?

After a garment is manufactured, its environmental impact is greatly related to its lifespan. Vallier offers a range of clothing with classic cuts made of sustainable materials. Thus, by offering a high quality, timeless and functional garment, we want to contribute to a vision that advocates for longevity and quality, rather than quantity. We must take care of our clothes to better preserve them, and in doing so, we contribute to more eco-responsible consumption in the long term.

Candle by Vallier & Apprenti Ôr'ganik

Vallier frequently collaborates with well-known brands. Do any of these collaborations stem from shared environmental values?

Indeed. Vallier is pleased to partner with brands that share its environmental values. For example, Apprenti Ôr'ganik is a brand that creates body products made in Montreal with natural and organic ingredients. Partnering with them allows us to promote our local industry and introduce a local expertise that encourages a healthy and ecological way of life.

We also favour collaborations with partners who offer sustainable products and who, like Vallier, are essential to urban life. Our Nalgene bottle or Leatherman multifunction tool, for example, are two products that meet high-quality responsible standards. A customer who buys one of these items will be able to use it for a very long time.

vallier-sustainable-brand05

Between certified fabrics, eco-responsible perspectives, and fruitful collaborations, Vallier is serious about sustainability. The Montreal-based brand has no intention of stopping now either, with more Canadian-made products and new collaborations on the horizon.

Towers and heat.

Exiting Incheon Airport, that was my first impression of South Korea as we drove into Seoul in +35 °C weather. Dome-like mountains with rocky orange tops bordered the distance. We weaved along 5-lane highways, through thousands of Kia’s and Hyundai’s, speeding past developments along the Han River. Screens flashed advertisements. Our driver had two Samsung Galaxy’s attached to his dash. Absolutely everything was new.

Despite it being July, I was in Seoul to meet BLACKYAK – a renowned mountaineering brand designing Everest-tested outerwear. What transpired was a crash course in Korean culture during the hottest week of summer.

25 million people live in and around Seoul, a true world megacity. By the time our taxi rolled into the Gangnam district – home to the 26 neighborhoods, Samsung’s HQ, and BLACKYAK – I was overwhelmed. South Korea’s been named the most innovative country six years straight by Bloomberg. K-Wave culture has taken the globe by storm (see BTS, ‘Gangnam Style,’ and Netflix’s K-Dramas). Gangnam is the country’s cultural, tech, and business center, and trust me, the skyline shows it.

We dropped our bags in our room and jetted up to the hotel rooftop, where Seoul’s endless towers were shrouded in sunset.

How did Seoul become the headquarters of Asia’s leading mountaineering brand? Well, Korea is 75% mountains and has a deep history of alpinism. Within Seoul, there are ranges for climbing and hiking, and nearby Pyeongchang hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics. I was told this by BLACKYAK CEO Tae Sun Kang when we met him the next morning in the brand’s headquarters, blocks from our hotel. Before that, our guide Hugh (Global Senior Manager) showed us the impressive HQ, featuring a massive storefront and trendy café.

70 and still an avid alpinist, Mr. Kang founded a mountaineering store in Seoul’s garment district in 1973. Today BLACKYAK has 300+ stores in Korea and hundreds throughout Asia. The black Himalayan yak, which Mr. Kang credits for leading him to safety when lost during a Nepalese trek many years ago, hung in artwork alongside mountaineering memorabilia throughout his office. That yak remains his inspiration.

Up close with their upcoming winter Global collection, we could see the details that have elevated BLACKYAK outerwear into the elite. Many designs use hybrid construction, incorporating up to four technical fabrics into a single jacket – almost unheard of in the weight, weatherproof, and mobility-obsessed outdoors industry. The results? BLACKYAK’s received 19 ISPO awards since they entered Western markets. Like other tech-savvy Korean businesses, their innovative products do the talking for them.

Up Birobong Peak

It was 7 AM, and I was inside a blue-lit company bus filled with the BLACKYAK Alpine Club (B.A.C.) headed to Chiaksan National Park. All BLACKYAK employees undergo mountaineering and climbing classes. After a Krispy Kreme pitstop, we arrived at the base of the 1439-meter Birobong Peak, and it was already +35 °C, my merinoblend Fulani shirt beading my sweat away.

Exiting the bus, we were handed garbage bags and pickers. The hike was part of the Clean The Mountain event – one of BLACKYAK’s initiatives to maintain alpine environments. This past spring, Mr. Kang was part of Everest’s basecamp cleanup in Nepal. Along with garment innovation, environmental preservation has become a focus of his company.

Our ascent up the shaded, sloping trail was lined with Mongolian and Japanese oaks. At a natural spring, one young trainee spotted some garbage off-trail and rushed into the bush with their picker. “There used to be more trash on the mountains. People realized they needed to be cleaned for them,” said a senior B.A.C. member, pointing to the younger recruits.

The day before, I’d met with BLACKYAK’s marketing team in a ritzy Seoul neighborhood at the NAU House café-retail hub, built with pre-assembled models to reduce its construction impact. The team explained a series of initiatives to reduce environmental degradation based on the brand tagline, ‘Made for Missions.’ They educate customers that sustainability isn’t a trend but a lifestyle, something that can be experienced (hence Clean the Mountain). Plus, the better made the gear, the less customers consume – and BLACKYAK products are renowned for quality.

The B.A.C. members on Birobong fully subscribed to this mantra, rocking gear with badges from past adventures. By the time we reached Birobong’s Peak, we were exhausted. Thousand-plus vertical meter hikes are challenging in any weather, but humidity had taken its toll. Our 40-plus member crew grabbed Kimbap (Korean sushi) and battery-powered fans from our backpacks, eating with views of the leafy valley below.

The flattened mountain base featured a fully-preserved Buddhist temple. Sore from the steep, rocky descent, soaked from a swim we’d just had at a mountain spring above, we witnessed monks leading prayer class. We drank water from a well as the temple gong rang through the valley at sunset.

Seoul – Past, Present, Future

To understand the future, you must examine the past. Much of Seoul is new after being destroyed during the Korean War. There is an understandable drive to rebuild around innovation. Korea’s geographical position between China, Japan, and South Asia is ideal for the 21st century. It allows BLACKYAK quick access to the fastest growing markets and the manufacturers that create high-end garments for the entire outdoor apparel industry.

While sightseeing, we went to the district where Mr. Kang opened his first store, and where a BLACKYAK shop still resides. It’s an area that’s still an outdoor retail hub filled with small buildings – a stark contrast from Gangnam. Next stop was the traditional Gwangjang Market, where our cabbie recommended a food stall littered with Anthony Bourdain photos amongst vendors selling dumplings, fried fish, and sauteed meats.

Shop the Bakosi Jacket

The following day, we toured the circularly-extravagant Dongdaemun Design Plaza by architect Zaha Hadid. The neo-futuristic building hosts fashion week along with cutting-edge exhibits. Its cold concrete bulges and hollowed interior were a relief from the +40 °C weather. We ended up in the 3-level d’Light exhibition at Samsung’s HQ, gesturing in front of screens while AI cleverly created narratives out of our motions.

You also can’t understand a culture without a proper meal, and in Korea, you shouldn’t eat BBQ without soju. This clear, colourless ‘burned liquor’ is a staple with crispy meat. Hugh facilitated an epic dinner at a restaurant featuring walls lined with thousands of empty soju bottles. While every imaginable cut of pork cooked on our table, we toasted new friendships and whatever else deserved a toast. We also learned the etiquette of soju bombs…turns out soju and beer mix well.

Gangnam Station on a midsummer night is neon lights and relentless energy. We stopped at bars as Korean baseball games played in window displays. Young people were out dressed in white and black, maximalist sneakers, and the latest streetwear. Noise pulsed from underground Karaoke bars and lights flashed from the 20th floor of a nearby building, showing glimpses of the nightclub within.

Reaching New Heights

Locally, BLACKYAK fosters mountaineering culture through their new B.A.C. center in the north of Seoul, near popular climbing and hiking mountains. On our final day, we visited this innovative structure, which includes a 3-story underground rock wall, a children’s gym with a five-story climbing wall, a store, plus staff and trainers. From the second-floor café window, we viewed the children’s climbing wall while parents sipped lattes nearby.

The center’s rooftop patio looks over the climbing routes pioneered by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, who was stationed in Seoul post-Korean War. After touring mountaineering team guest rooms and alpine-safety course classrooms, we took turns bouldering novice rock wall routes. Our guide explained the center gives back to an area of Seoul that is a climbing mecca. Judging by children reaching the top of the walls, the future of Korean mountaineering looks bright.

For our final evening, we went up Lotte World Tower – the world’s 5th largest building – to take in Seoul’s massiveness. A ride in the world’s fastest ‘sky elevator’ shot us 118 floors in one minute. Afterwards, we spent the evening on a rooftop patio to watch the sunset behind the tower, which dwarfed the surrounding 40-story buildings. We drank beer and ate burgers as dusk settled. At dark, Lotte World Tower lit up, and a light show appeared, complete with emojis.

To say my time in Seoul was a blast of intense heat and good times would be an understatement. Exploring new cultures and settings is easier with a guide, and Hugh did a first-class job. BLACKYAK’s presence in Korea was noticeable everywhere – the brand is clearly the country’s leading technical outdoor apparel. Judging by their designs and investments, it’s only a matter of time before they follow in the footsteps of other Korean giants. Seoul is the future, and BLACKYAK is next.

They say that a magician never reveals his secrets. Lucky for us, Houdini Sportswear has given Altitude Sports a glimpse into its clothing manufacturing process to let us know that its incredible feat of achieving a 100% circular collection by 2022 isn’t just smoke and mirrors. What does it mean to be circular?

For Houdini, operating a circular clothing system means that no resources are extracted from nature, all the industry’s emissions are lowered, and its concept of waste eliminated. Can’t believe your eyes? Neither could we…until we saw the hard facts.

No sleight of hand here—Houdini’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection boasts renewable, recycled, recyclable, and biodegradable materials. By producing responsible clothing that will help protect our planet for generations to come, Houdini Sportswear is set to become the choice of adventurers worldwide.

Houdini doesn’t plan on stopping once their 2022 goal of a circular clothing system is achieved. In fact, they’re just getting started. Two other equally important initiatives are Houdini’s commitment to transparency and their commitment to turn waste into a resource.

Transparency

By guaranteeing full traceability and transparency in their value chains, Houdini holds itself accountable to consumers and motivates other clothing manufacturers to do the same. But Houdini recognises that, when it comes to sustainability, there is no room for competition. Instead, teamwork and cooperation are needed in order to make a global impact. This dedication to an eco-friendly future has led Houdini to reveal their sustainable secrets on Houdini Open Source, a platform for sharing knowledge on sustainable methodologies, technologies, and solutions worldwide. The platform acts as a how-to guide for other manufacturers interested in going green.

Turning Waste into a Resource

Houdini aims to turn all its waste streams, including microfibre pollution, into a resource flow. By the year 2030:

 • 20% of all textile fabrics used will be regenerative waste from land, ocean, or air turned into a resource.
 • Resources used for trimming, dying, and processing chemicals will be transformed into circular and or sustainable materials.
 • 100% of energy consumed in the production chain will be renewable.
 • Houdini will become net neutral.

Taking Center Stage

Houdini Sportswear’s Project Mono Air will have you oohing and aahing. The world’s first fleece jacket that can fight plastic waste was created in collaboration with Polartecworld-renowned insulation manufacturers. This piece of magic is called the Mono Air Houdi. The Houdi’s Polartec fabric reduces microfibre shedding by 80% and can be recycled again, again, and again, virtually eliminating the possibility that the Houdi will ever end up in a landfill. The fabric stops microfibre shedding (a major source of pollution) by knitting fibres into small pockets between a face and back fabric. For an added sustainability boost, the Mono Air Houdi is also made from 80% recycled and fully recyclable polyester.

The Pièce de Résistance

If Houdini’s promise of net neutrality didn’t have you shouting bravo, their next trick sure will. Beyond net neutrality lies regeneration. The ultimate goal is to own and operate a clothing manufacturing industry that not only has zero environmental impact but instead has a positive impact on the planet. Now that is a show worth buying tickets for.
