About Hunter Boots
Trusted by multiple generations for their impeccable function in wet weather, Hunter boots continues to manufacture some of the world’s most recognizable waterproof rubber boots.A Posh Past
Hunter boots began over 160 years ago in Edinburgh Scotland. American businessman Henry Lee Norris emigrated to Scotland in 1856 to work on a patent for Charles Goodyear, the inventor of the modern-day tire. Norris found a fully operational factory where he could begin work and officially established the North British Rubber Company. Originally, Norris focused on a variety of rubber products besides boots, including tires, conveyor belts, and hot water bottles. The North British Rubber Company eventually changed its name to Hunter and began focusing solely on rubber boots. The brand's hallmark product was the Original Green Wellington boot, first produced in 1956. As their popularity rose throughout the ensuing decades, Hunter reached the noble level when they achieved a Royal Warrant... by Appointment to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1977 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1982.
On the Frontlines
Hunter boots have a long history of supporting the armed forces. in World War I, the company was commissioned to produce waterproof boots for soldiers in the trenches. Production ramped up considerably, with over 1.1 million pairs of boots being created. The boots performed extraordinarily well and were championed for their reliability in the thick, wet mud of Eastern European trenches. Making a name for themselves, Hunter was asked again to produce boots for wartime efforts during WWII. Following the wars, Hunter boots became well-known amongst civilians and quickly became a preferred rain boot. In more recent years, celebrities have begun wearing the boots in wet conditions, further pushing the brand’s recognition to the international scale.Commitment to Preservation
Using rubber as the primary ingredient in their boots, Hunter maintains a close tie to nature and the trees used to harvest their raw materials. As such, the company has adopted an 8-point pledge to promote sustainability.Hunter boot’s largest goal is to work towards all of their boots being Forest Stewardship Council certified by 2025. In 2022, 68% of their rubber is FSC certified, a number which they plan to increase to 86% by next year. The company plants thousands of trees a year in local communities where their rubber is sourced, and they’re responsible for fully funding a park ranger’s salary every year.
