This year The North Face launched their #SheMovesMountains campaign, an inspiring initiative looking to change the face of exploring. There’s no better influence than a role model with whom we can identify. The movement shines a light on powerful female athletes from all over the globe whose adventures are building the foundation for a new generation of explorers.
Hilaree Nelson
From the smoldering volcanoes of Kamchatka to jagged Bolivian peaks, Hilaree is first and foremost a ski mountaineer, but also an insatiable explorer. Named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2018, she travels the world in search of new trails and summits to discover, climb, and ski.

Ashima Shiraishi
A climbing enthusiast, Ashima is a prodigy who collects exploits like others do coins. She’d already climbed her first V11 at age 11. Today at all of 16 years old she’s considered one of the best in her discipline. Her agility on the boulders is impressive, and she can’t seem to stop breaking records: first female – and youngest person – to climb a V15; 2x youth lead climbing world champion, 2x youth bouldering world champion, and more. Keep your eye on her, because she’s just getting started.

Margo Hayes
Margo started off as a gymnast, but an injury turned her to her current passion: climbing. When she’s not scaling slopes, she’s ascending podiums, with an impressive collection of international victories. She stands out among female climbers and has proven she can hang with the best of male climbers as well. In her trophy case, you’ll find La Rambla (5.15a), Bad Girls Club (5.14d) and The Crew (5.14c).

Tiera Fletcher
Tiera Fletcher grasped early on that the concept of exploring wasn’t limited to our earthly confines, so she threw herself into conquering Mars. Why not? An MIT grad in 2017, she’s making her mark in aerospace engineering, a very much male-dominated field, designing rockets that will send us to the Red Planet – and perhaps beyond.

Fernanda Maciel
At 38 years old, this ultra-marathoner is ruining the record books. Described as ‘A fighter who runs’, in September 2017 she conquered Kilimanjaro, running the ascent and descent in 10 hours and 6 minutes, shattering the previous female mark of 12 hours 58. She’s also the first woman to ascend (22 hours 52 minutes) and descend (14 hours 53 minutes) the Aconcagua, the highest summit in the Americas at 6989 meters.
