The jackets PreCip from Marmot and Finder from Mountain Hardwear represent an entry point into the wonderful world of waterproof-breathable jackets. You’ll appreciate their waterproofness as well as their compactibility.
Indeed, the main difference between them and their higher-priced brothers comes down to features, fit, breathability and durability. While those are important considerations, sometimes the price is the only point you want or have to consider.

With its 2L 50D Dry.Q Core fabric, this jacket is ideal to stay warm and dry during your everyday activity. Its exterior fabric is tough, durable, abrasion resistant and windwater-resistant. It has two covered, zippered handwarmer pockets and a two-way adjustable hood to protect you perfectly from the rain. You wont be disappointed with Mountain Harwear’s Finder jacket since it offers the perfect balance to keep you dry and comfortable inside and out.
Similarities
First of all, these jackets have one mission and that is to protect you from the rain. With their hoods, seamed seals and waterproof coating, you’ll be sealed from the environment.
Their breathability means that you won’t get soaked from your perspiration. Don’t expect miracles though, although they do breathe, it is a limited feature that only really applies if you aren’t moving much, which, to be honest, is most of the time for most of us.
An added benefit is that these jackets are both light and packable, making them great for a low-cost emergency jacket that you can stuff in your pack for every adventure.
Fit
To be honest, these jackets may not have the most flattering fit, that is one of the sacrifices that had to be done in order to keep the price down. So expect something that may appear slightly boxy rather than form-fitting.
Bottom Line
Wondering what’s the difference between the PreCip from Marmot and the Finder from Mountain Hardwear? Which one to get? If price is truly your only criteria, then get the Finder from Mountain Hardwear. However, I do think it’s worth going up a notch to the PreCip. I think you’ll really appreciate the extra features, especially the pit-zips, which are a necessity for a waterproof jacket. Not only that, but it’s lighter, more compressible and offers the Angel-Wing Movement® technology.
